Mirena coil to combat anaemia?

LittleRedRuth · 08/09/2023 10:27

My ferritin has been low for years and now it’s currently 12 with my haemoglobin also low now too. Dr thinks the sudden low haemoglobin could be down to recent blood clotting in my periods and so want me to try the mirena coil to stop my periods.

has anyone tried it? I’m 42 - no more kids so not bothered about the reproductive effects but i am worried about hormones/foreign bodies inside me!

Any advice welcome

Hi , I’ve got low iron , and the gynaecologist, put me on the mini pill , as I refused the coil as I was worried about not getting on with it .

I have Mirena as part of HRT, haven't had a period in 2 years. Insertion was a bit painful, I had a day of cramps and a bit of spotting, but otherwise it has been great.

Had the mirena for 2.5 years now for bad endo - first time in over 10 years I’ve not been anaemic and wish I’d had one sooner!

Yep, it’s life changing and I wish I’d done it way sooner.

Hasn't solved my anaemia despite stopping my periods

But what it has done I'd force my GP to actually take it seriously and investigate for underlying causes instead of fobbing me off with "its totally normal if you have periods" again

I was offered this and decided against it. It doesn’t necessarily solve the problem of anaemia. And you can solve it without the coil, just by regularly taking iron supplements. I was also worried that without periods I wouldn’t notice any menopausal changes in my normal cycle, and I wouldn’t know if I was pregnant (and I definitely don’t want to be). So I said no thanks, and I just take an iron supplement 3x a week.

Can be great. Does not work for everyone.

I’ve never had a mirena but I had endometrial ablation for the same reasons and it literally changed my life. Solving the anaemia improved every area of my physical and mental health so anything that can do that is worth a try!
