Mirena Issues

Hi,

There are many threads on the mirena and side effects so bare with me.

I decided to have the mirena because I started to feel peri menopausal. The Dr suggested it I've got friends who rave about it. I thought ok let's go for it.

I had it inserted in May, no real issues, barely hurt. I have however bled either a lot or spotted pretty much everyday since.

About 7 weeks ago I started to get back ache which has got worse. I've had physio they said nothing really wrong maybe bad posture.

But this last week I'm struggling, im tired, my back aches. Sometimes my stomach aches. My husband reckons my mood has improved but I think I feel more anxious and generally down, but maybe that's because my back aches all the time.

I've got a review in two weeks and I'm very tempted to have it removed. I'm not sure I feel any real benefits.

Is the tiredness simply because I'm bleeding so much? Will it settle? Is it even worth it.

My periods before were starting to become irregular. I had 3 heavy days and 3 light days. But this every day business is driving me mad.

Just a bit confused and wondering why I had it at all now.

Hi
The mirena is generally used to help control heavy periods, for contraception or to act as the progesterone part of a HRT regime.

Do you take oestrogen? It won't help peri meno symptoms alone I don't think?

They can take a long time to settle unfortunately and bleeding/ spotting is common.

The aches may be co incidental. Did you experience any of the symptoms, prior to the mirena ?

They usually say give it 6 months settling in time. Obviously if you feel unwell, get it removed.

Good luck 🤞

Thanks for replying.

And no, I didn't experience any of this pre mirena.

Having just started heavily bleeding again today I don't think I can hack this

I feel utterly worn out. And no real reason to, summer hols had a lot of lovely time off, work isn't overly stressful right now. I feel more content in my day to day life. I've got lots of lovely things coming up but right now struggling to look forward to them which isn't me at all. 🤔🤷🏼‍♀️

Mmmm... could a combination of the mirena and peri symptoms. Low or fluctuations oestrogen levels, can kill joy and happiness in a heartbeat!

I think I'd be inclined to get it removed . I had a mirena fitted last May. After the initial spotting, the bleeding stopped. I'm post menopausal though.

Hope you get sorted soon.

Thanks. I hear so many comments from people who spotted only briefly. Mine is definitely more than that a good day is spotting. I've bought more pads this last few months than ever before. 🙄

I think I'm inclined to go back to the Dr who recommended it and see what she thinks. I had wanted to have this settle before starting HRT.

I had this put in with the idea it was going to be part of my HRt treatment but I was worried about starting everything at once

I’ve just had mine out today. It’s been in nearly 3 years. I had heavy bleeding at first but Tempe last year I have had terrible acne and my boobs have been on fire regularly. I never suffered with acne before this. Glad to get it out!

Mrsworried1 · 22/09/2023 12:53

Having similar issues

Had a mirena fitted for bleeding in between periods / basically all the time

got it end of January fitted under GA as part of a hysteroscopy procedure to check my womb

smear normal

no explaination

still spotting almost 8 months on although no heavy periods since about 6 months

I’m utterly fed up x

Cincinnatus · 22/09/2023 20:56

Ugh! You poor thing. I feel for you. Will you have it removed?

Lollyl88 · 14/01/2025 21:47

@Mum2boys01 Hello. I'm struggling with side effects from mirena settling (or so I think!). Just wondering if you had it out in the end or your symptoms settled?

Lollyl88 · 21/07/2025 17:58

@Mrsworried1How are you? Just wondering if your bleeding ever stopped? I’m in the same position and thinking about having it out. Bleeding more with it in than when I didn’t have it!

Mrsworried1 · 21/07/2025 19:05

@Lollyl88 sadly it didn’t stop! I’ve since had another hysteroscopy, microwave ablation (then a nasty womb infection and being hospitalised) then a new coil fitted. That was in March/april
so will see how I get on x

Lollyl88 · 21/07/2025 19:37

@Mrsworried1oh I am so sorry to hear that! That sounds like a really rough journey. I hope this fairs better for you this time! 🤞🏻
