Ovarian cysts/masses awaiting urgent results, scared

I’ve been suffering from heavy irregular periods, bloating and discomfort for a while, I’ve just thought it was maybe the peri menopause - I’m 41.

The past two weeks it’s intensified,Friday I was in agony went to Dr, she took a urine test which was positive for pregnancy- that was a false result as not sexually active and had blood in urine. She was worried about appendicitis though given symptoms. She rang the hospital and I was sent to a surgical ward for tests. Had an urgent CT scan, it showed a nodule on spleen and on lung, apparently these can just be incidental, follow up scan in 3 months for those.

They said that there were very large cysts on my ovaries and they can feel them as masses .They took further bloods and my height & weight. They said I’d have urgent ultrasound as they give clearer pics and I’d be discussed at their (gynaecology ) multi person meeting . Sent home Saturday night.
Phone call Sunday asking me to go for ultrasounds today. Had one with full bladder and then a vaginal one with probe. The lady said she’d write report today and send to gynae. She said I should hear back soon given urgency of referral.

I can’t stop crying and shaking, my heart is racing and I’m convinced I’m going to die, leaving my son, who has ASD. I’m a single mum and petrified.

Has anyone else had similar please? The fact I was referred for an urgent Bank Holiday scan has made me think it can only be cancer.

I’m sorry to ramble, but I’m desperate.

Thanks for reading.

I haven't had similar but wanted to send you my best wishes. Is there anyone close to you that can support you? Totally understand your panic and anxiety. Hoping you get some answers and direction soon .

Yes, I've had this twice. Both times I had to have the masses removed surgically but they were non-cancerous. The first time they were convinced it was cancer – something to do with how it looked on the scan? – but it wasn't. Hope you get the same news.

WeeOrcadian · 29/08/2023 16:33

OP, we've got you, virtually.

Is there someone in real life that you can confide in? A close friend? Someone to pour it all out to, if you think that will help

Or here - we'll listen

Sortmylifeout52 · 29/08/2023 20:05

OP, hang on in there...

Same as @WeeOrcadian , is there a close friend/ family member who will listen and support?

I'm so sorry, your worry is completely understandable.

I had a massive ovarian cyst when I was younger. Was removed (along with ovary) as an emergency, then sent off to check for malignancy. Came back as benign.

Another time I had a mass near my remaining ovary. When I saw consultant (as urgent), he was blunt. Convinced I had cancer, and actually fitted me into his schedule for next day to remove it. I came out of there shaking and crying. It turned out to be a wierd chocolate cyst in an unusual place.

Both times, things were OK.

I hope these experiences give you a bit of hope. Because even when things seem as if they could be serious, they often aren't.

We're all here for you, rhe waiting is awful.

Bumping as op needs support.

Needapadlockonmyfridge · 29/08/2023 21:44

I hope you don't have to wait long to hear further. The waiting is awful.

I have had cysts before, and urgent referral, which really scared me, but the cysts disappeared thank goodness. But I can remember the worry all too well.

I hope you hear back v soon. Xx

Another positive story- when I was pregnant I went for my first scan and they discovered a massive cyst. At first they were going to admit me that day, then then changed their minds and I went in for surgery a couple of days later. Cyst and ovary removed and both me and baby fine. That was over 20 years ago and I have had no more problems.
I won't say don't worry because of course you will worry but there is a good chance that it will be fine. Hopefully the positive stories are making you feel a bit better.
