Nocturnal panic attacks

Just woke up after having another nocturnal panic attack. These have been happening every night for the past two months it's driving me insane. I'll fall asleep and within ten minutes of being asleep I jump up and I feel like I am choking on something or I am dying. Anyone else suffered with these?

No, but didn’t want to read and run. You okay? Sounds really awful. Are you on your own?

lillie23 · 22/08/2023 01:12

I'm fine thank you. I am so use to them that within a few seconds of waking up I know it's just one of those things. It's just driving me insane as it takes ages to fall back asleep

Have a look at sleep paralysis.

It's happened to me a few times, it's really scary. I can't imagine how you feel having something like this every night!

Copperoliverbear · 22/08/2023 01:36

I didn't have night ones only day,
But stopped drinking caffeine and started taking kalms and also cut down other stimulants like chocolate and they stopped. X

NotYourHolidayDick · 22/08/2023 01:39

Yep I'm here <waves>
When they first started, DH called an ambulance as I was presenting as having a heart attack.
I go pale and faint, can't breathe, limbs go tingly and I get the impending doom that I'm dying. Have to hang my head out of the window and deep breathe, then lie down with my feet under a pillow to raise them to stop me passing out.

I've found CBD oil my saviour. I know people think its crap, fuck even I thought it was crap. But since taking the decent stuff before bed every night I've only had one in the last few months instead of every night.

Make of that what you will, but its fixed me good and proper.

This is happening to my daughter, right now who has anxiety and panic attacks.

MrsMorrisey · 22/08/2023 03:47

My sympathies, it sounds horrific.

Are you sure you are breathing?

It sounds like a reaction to apnea.

YnyshirGal · 22/08/2023 03:54

Yes I had exactly the same experience, every night for 6 months with no clear trigger, it’s SO exhausting - you have my sympathy.

I was prescribed Sertraline which sorted it, however it turns out it’s hormonal anxiety that caused it and a recent move to HRT has meant I have come off the Sertraline and the nocturnal panic attacks haven’t returned.

Jevwaypock · 22/08/2023 03:56

I used to have these op and it’s awful , i didn't feel like i was choking but my heart used to be pounding, i would be sweating and i would be terrified and not know why. Probably not really helpful nor a good idea but I slept with the TV on for years! something really light like GBBO or the shopping channel for some reason made me feel safer (i used to live alone) x

Yeah I recon I could be, I'm 41 so chances are that I am. I sympathise with you as they really are not nice. I need to get my bloods done to check for sure. Im like a zombie most days as it always takes me ages to fall back asleep again
