Hysteroscopy Gas and Air?

itstimeforme · 30/07/2023 09:55

I'm am having a hysteroscopy in a few weeks to have a possible biopsy and/or polyp removal. I have had hysteroscopies before and found them painful with just a local anaesthetic. I will be offered gas and air or injection this time. Has anyone had gas and air and did it help? I've never used it. Thanks.

Can you not have a general anaesthetic?
I had it under anaesthetic. X

I had one a couple of months ago( I'm late 50s). Was told to take a couple of paracetamol beforehand.

Having read on here all sorts of stories about how appalling the procedure was and how those experiencing it wished they could have it under general anesthesia I was dreading it.

But although it was not at all pleasant it was nothing like as bad as I feared. One part was pretty painful for a short time( think when they were pumping in the water) and I did let out a small moan, but the rest was perfectly bearable.

Came out and drove myself home afterwards and carried on as normal which wouldn't have been able to do had I had sedation or GA.

So I'm sure you'll be fine with gas and air.

I had this a couple of months ago. Plus a coil fitted at the same time. They put an injection in my cervix and I used gas and air. I didn't feel any pain at all. Previously was in agony having the coil fitted so def a fan of gas and air. Word of warning.. don't drive yourself as I felt quite woozy afterwards

Penthrox is administered in a similar way to traditional gas & air but is stronger. Could your unit give you that?

Thanks everyone, no option to have a general. Will try a combination of gas and air and local injection. Was taking to my friend earlier who had hers with not even a paracetamol and didn't feel a thing. I must be hyper sensitive Grin
