Mirena coil and spotting

I’m 43 and have the Mirena coil fitted and have recently started bleeding between periods. My coil is due for renewal at the end of this year and I checked this morning and I couldn’t find the ‘threads’ so perhaps it has gone walkabout or fallen out and that’s caused the bleeding. Who knows. It could also be an age thing I guess?

Has anyone had the coil for many years and then started randomly bleeding? Most of the time it is brown discharge but I did have some bright red blood a few days ago that then disappeared. I have a GP appt next Thursday to check for the coil and to tell them about the bleeding but next week seems a while away and now I’m worrying about sinister things like cancer even though this is a much less likely cause.

I'm on my second mirena. I had absolutely no bleeding whatsoever for the first 5 years with the first one, then started to have random spotting as it obviously became less effective (I was very late getting it changed due to lockdown). I got my 2nd one in October 2021, and unfortunately have just started having random spotting that may or may not be periods returning, after another year of nothing. GP unconcerned, says random spotting/bleeding is normal with Mirena (if not normal for me) but has referred me for ultrasound 'for reassurance'.

Thanks, that's really helpful. Good to get the ultrasound but I'm sure it's nothing to worry about.

Update, went to the GP and they can't see the bloody strings of the coil! Now have an ultrasound tomorrow.

Slightly panicking that it's gone somewhere it shouldn't and it'll need to be removed and we go on holiday in ten days...
