Ectropion and random bleeding

Hi ladies. I went to the GP today as I've had an increase in mid cycle bleeding over the last few months. I have a copper IUD since 2017 and, ever since, I have had random mid-cycle bleeding, bleeding after sex etc. I was checked back in 2018 and had an ultrasound which showed the IUD was in the correct place. I went back to my doctor as thinks were ongoing and she said that "there is nothing sinister so don't worry about it".

Fast forward 5 years and things have rumbled on, only getting worse in the last month or so (mid cycle spotting / bleeding which would be bright red usually) and a 3 day spell of light bleeding after sex.

The GP today (a different one to the one who told me years ago that all was fine) said I had an ectropion and could also see my IUD threads. She said the cervix looked healthy and couldn't feel any masses.

I've been referred to the colposcopy clinic now (2ww). Has anyone else experienced these symptoms and it all be OK?

Hi OP,

I'm current going through something similar and was wondering how you got on? My symptoms are irregular bleeding and bleeding after sex.

Gp examined me and diagnosed ectropion (I had a baby 9 months ago and she said this was common during/after pregnancy). Anyway she referred me for a colposcopy but not on the 2ww so I'm currently slightly anxious waiting for my appt to come through!

Hi @Feelingpositive2021 - hope you’re ok. I had my colposcopy on Monday and, even though I was super nervous, it was all fine. I didn’t need a biopsy as there was no contact bleeding but it did sting a bit when she applied the dye / solution, which lasted for a few hours afterwards. The colposcopist said she couldn’t see why I was having the bleeding (nothing sinister found) but it was likely hormonal. She recommended the mirena coil which would help with periods / hormonal side of things, but otherwise I’ve been discharged from the service! I have two friends who also had same symptoms (breakthrough bleeding and bleeding after sex) and they were all fine too. Hope it all goes well with you x

I've had mid cycle bleeding for the last 4 years. Sometimes it's a lot - an extra week of bleeding the same heaviness as a period. I've had loads of investigations and nothing has been found. On ultrasound they found a large ovarian cyst which I recently had removed (which hasn't stopped the bleeding), the surgeon also performed a hysteroscopy, inspected my uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes during the surgery. I've had hormone blood tests. Up to date with smear. Absolutely nothing wrong except I also have an ectropion. I've been told it's likely a hormonal imbalance and nothing can be done! (I can't have hormonal contraception due to migraines)

Hi how are you? How old are you if you don’t mind me asking. I’ve had bleeding between periods for the last three years. Varying in heaviness and no pattern to it.
I’m terrified to have sex with my husband as I’ve bled the day after that although I’m unsure if it’s that or just because I was spotting around that time anyway.
Investigations have been internal ultrasound, many gynaecologists having a look down there, and finally at the start of the year I had my smear as usual and a hysteroscopy and biopsy of the womb lining. Thankfully nothing has shown but I just find it hard living with this bleeding and not really understanding why my body is doing this!
At the hysteroscopy I had a mirena fitted, and I’m still bleeding all the time. I’m literally fed up! Next step is ablation. I’m only 34 and this is making me so miserable.
I was meant to have a follow up after 6 months but the hospital must have forgot about me
as I’ve had no appointment and I’m waiting on a call back to find out why. Wonder if I should have had colposcopy but the gynaecologist said he does them at our hospital and he feels it’s unnecessary?!

Hi sorry it took it a few days to reply! I'm 32, and this has been going on since I was 28. The only thing I haven't tried is a coil, but I really don't want to.. I've heard stories about pain, and that it doesn't necessarily stop bleeding anyway (as your case seems to be!). I know how you feel, I'm fed up too. Since my surgery my periods have gotten longer too, this month's was 9 days 🤦🏻‍♀️ the main thing my GP is now focusing on is keeping my iron levels up, as there's little else that can be done for me - I haven't had children yet so things like ablation or hysterectomy are off the cards for now.

I've been told colposcopy is completely unnecessary if you have a clear smear. I wouldn't go through it if they didn't think you needed to. I've been discharged by my gynecologist as there's nothing else to be done at the mo. Just gotta live with it and try to avoid becoming anaemic! I feel your frustration, it's crap, but you've had all the tests like I have so there's nothing really to worry about. It's very likely hormonal like mine x
