Might this have been an ovarian torsion?

I’ll try to be brief!

All my life I have had very painful heavy periods. Pain was always just the usual dull cramp sensation - until about 2.5 years ago when the pain changed to more of a stabbing pain (about December 2020). Over the next few months I would have the stabbing pain before/on my period and I would also have it randomly mid cycle. It would come from nowhere and be so severe that I would have to lie in a ball until pain medicine kicked in, but even then it wouldn’t completely go. I remember once the pain wouldn’t go even with pain medicine and I was awake all night in bad pain, then felt bruised the next day.

Then in May 2021 on the first few days of my period I had the worst pain I have ever experienced. I was being sick for 2 days, literally unable to move. I called 111 in case it was appendicitis but the pain was on the wrong side. It subsided after 2 days I think but I felt bruised for a while after. Called the GP but they honestly were useless and wouldn’t do anything beyond prescribing tranexamic (?) acid, despite me saying this was not normal for me.

In August 2022 I had another episode of bad pain and being sick, but thankfully it only lasted a day. I still get this stabbing pain before/on my period and basically I know if I don’t take pain medicine ASAP, I’ll be bent double and being sick.

I have recently found out I have endometrioma cysts on one ovary and normal cysts on the other. I’ve always wondered what the bad pain was and why the change in the type of pain? From Dr Google I’m really wondering if I had/am having ovarian torsion?! I’ve been referred to gynae for an MRI so hopefully that will show more but would be interested to hear if anyone else has had an ovarian torsion?

Could be. I had very similar pain once and it was a cyst rupturing. I also have endometriosis, sending much sympathy

If you have cysts it could have been a cyst rupturing it's horrifically painful when it happens

My friend's daughter's just been through this - it was horrendous. She is waiting for an operation. You really need to see a doctor - there are serious consequences.

Yes I did wonder if it could be a cyst rupturing! The pain was on the right which is the side of my endometrioma cysts, but I suppose it’s possible I did previously have normal cysts on that side.

Yes def an ovarian torsion looks awful, basically the ovary gets damaged and then eventually can go into necrosis 😬

I’m hoping gynae will be in touch soon to answer all my Qs.
