Breast biopsy telephone consultation wait

Hello,

I found a lump in my breast and on Tuesday afternoon (it is now Thursday morning) I had a thin needle biopsy.

This morning I have received a letter from the hospital to say I have a telephone consultation with a nurse in three weeks time.

Does this mean they've already had the biopsy results and it is all fine?

No I wouldn't think so- I had a 21/2 week wait after my biopsy and it wasnt clear. did you have an ultrasound - they told me quite a bit about the likely result after they didn't that

I had an ultrasound and from looking at the lump they then did a thin needle biopsy and sent it off.

This was Tuesday pm. They said I'll hear in two two three weeks. If I get a phone call then no further action. Letter for appt means further action. I received a letter for a phone appt with a nurse. So I'm guessing if it was something bad then a consultant would talk to me and it would be gave to face.

I just thought a) less than 48 hours seems quick to get a result b) why don't they just write that on a letter rather than go to the bother of writing and sending a letter to say we will speak to you in three weeks

It is customary that the follow-up appointment to discuss the test results is booked in as soon as the screening and/or biopsy has been done. Often, this is done directly after the first appointment and a letter given confirming the time and date. However, sometimes, this isn't possible, so a confirmation of the phone appointment is posted to you.

It is rare for results to come back within 48 hours, I think the usual turn around time is a week to ten days. Once they have the results back, if there's an issue and further treatment needs to take place, they will call or text to offer an in-person appointment ASAP.

I hope this clarifies things.

Benign!

Awww, lovely news. So it was about a 4 week wait. I had a biopsy in Coventry on Monday… hoping for similar news to yours 🤞

girlladywoman · 05/08/2023 13:29

Yes! Have you had yours yet?

Yes! Have you had yours yet?

I have a wait of about 4 weeks…. I’m confident it’s nothing. 🤞

Ah right yes - I'm sure they'll have told you something but now if not!
