Bleeding with Mirena coil

ALittleBitExtra · 25/05/2023 17:16

I'm mid 40's, likely peri meno. I have a mirena coil which was put in to deal with very heavy periods, and it literally changed my life. No bleeding whatsoever after a few months, and for 5 wonderful years.

Anyway, I had a new one put in at the hospital at the end of 2021, and once again after a few months I had no bleeding whatsoever. Great.

However - since February, I've been having increasing bleeding at random times. At first this was just a bit of pink or brown discharge, but it's increased to proper bleeding with clots (sorry for tmi). None of my other usual menstrual symptoms, and I'm bleeding now when I'd had a bit of bleeding less than 2 weeks ago.

It often feels like it comes on a day or two after intercourse (which doesn't happen that often itself) but this could be purely coincidence.

I guess what I'm asking, is should I be concerned about an apparent return of periods (albeit considerably lighter and much more sporadic than before) about 18 months into having my 2nd Mirena coil, after it having so successfully and completely stopped my periods?

I’ve had the mirena coil for 4 and abit months now, all periods stopped it was great. The last week I’ve been bleeding with small clots and having stomach cramp mood swings and headaches been to the gp they are booking me in to have a ultrasound

helpmum2003 · 23/11/2023 19:04

OP you need to see your GP. You should be investigated for abnormal bleeding. I work in this area.

Queenb1987 · 23/11/2023 19:49

Are you answering to my question

Pollyparkin · 23/11/2023 20:02

I've got a gp app in 2 weeks for the same thing. Mine are semi regular spells of spotting but this week have progressed to a very light period

Queenb1987 · 23/11/2023 21:33

I haven’t bled for 4 years and now I’ve bled for 5 days

helpmum2003 · 24/11/2023 11:50

My concern would be bleeding early on in a Mirena's life when there was no bleeding with previous Mirena.
Bleeding towards the end of its life wouldn't concern me. Neither would a one off bleeding 4 months in.

I had exactly this experience and it turned out to be fibroids. You should see your GP and get an ultrasound.

Queenb1987 · 24/11/2023 21:35

Yes I have a ultrasound soon

Ejismyf · 24/11/2023 21:40

Go to your doctor, it might of slipped down to the neck of your cervix. I'd also get a smear done. I had one put in in May and bled non stop till the end of August when I went to go get treatment for CIN3 cells, the consultant said it hadn't been put in my uterus correctly and was just in the cervix. I was also getting alot of sciatica pain. This is all stopped now it's been removed.

Haggisfish3 · 24/11/2023 21:47

I have had very odd bleeding with mirena. I have fibroids and a polyp which was removed. My fibroids are in the muscle wall which makes them less lokely
to respond to mirena. I started bleeding again after six months of no bleeding. Gp arranged for urgent ultrasound scan but all is normal and coil
is in correct place. Mine seems to be just strong hormonal surges related to peri menopause. Just to give you a reassuring story. 🙂

StellaGibson2022 · 24/11/2023 21:54

Am sure all is okay but you should get checked out. The GP will refer you for a scan.

I had this recently and it was due to low progesterone so am now topping that up and its stopped. This is as part of my HRT plan though, which the mirena is just one part of for me.

weegiemum · 24/11/2023 21:58

Please get yourself seen by a doctor!

I had similar symptoms and brushed them off, as you do.

Dd2 is 20 next week, my mirena baby as it had slipped into my cervix. She's the light of our lives, s beautiful person and a newly qualified beauty therapist working in a posh spa while saving as hard as she can for a flat of her own.

So if you really don't want a baby, go for a coil check and ask for an ultrasound!

longtompot · 24/11/2023 22:04

Any unexplained bleeding should be investigated so I would contact my GP if I was in your position.

@Queenb1987 I don't know if you are the op under a name change, but if not, maybe start your own thread about it. It's just a bit confusing amongst the OPs posts.

ALittleBitExtra · 25/11/2023 07:56

I've just seen there are new posts on this thread.

I did end up going to the GP who wasn't concerned. I Still was not happy, as I felt that unexpected bleeding should be looked into, so paid for a private ultrasound, which showed an 11mm thick endometrium and a small submucosal fibroid. I took that back to GP who begrudgingly has referred me to gynaecology but the appointment isn't until April... I continue to bleed, not heavily but for about 7 days out of every 21, very much like periods but not iyswim.

It was a few data after a period, so probably day 10 or so.
