Do I need to ask for a colposcopy - mid cycle bleeding

Hello

I’m mid 40s and have had a Mirena since 2021, which was inserted after fibroids and endo removal. It’s been fantastic! Periods have been v light spotting. I have a cervical erosion also.

I went to see a consultant this week. She examined me and took a smear. Cervical erosion was treated with silver nitrate. Everything appeared normal on ultrasound.

Over the past couple of months, I’ve noticed mid-cycle bleeding and lower back pain. Over the past month, I’ve had 3 separate cycles of bleeding alone.

Hopefully, smear results will be normal. Consultant didn’t seem bothered about the bleeding and put it down to Mirena. I could, of course, be peri. Should I ask for further investigations?

With the mirena you don't have cycles anymore. So it's not midcycle bleeding as in when you are on no contraception . It causes hormones to fluctuate and the uterine lining becomes less stable. I would say as your smear is normal it's more likely to be mirena related. If it would put your mind at rest ask for a colposcopy. I don't think it's anything to worry about.

Thank you for replying. I’ve always felt I’ve known when my period was due since Mirena as I get some cramping, sweating etc. I’ll wait to see what smear result is.

@Magnoliainbloom i could have written your post as I have exactly your symptoms. Except I took a smear test in February and it came back normal. I am spotting brown blood and if I run or play tennis then I get red blood. I think it is the ectropion that is causing the bleeding. I am going to go to the Gp next week and ask for help

Thanks for your post. My smear was normal. I guess my bleeding is hormonal/ectropion related. I read that exercise can exacerbate bleeding. I work out strenuously and so that could be a contributing factor also.
