Dermoid ovarian cyst experiences?

Cupofteaaa5 · 26/03/2023 22:15

Has anyone had a large dermoid cyst on their ovary and experienced pain/other symptoms?

I've been diagnosed with a 10cm dermoid, confirmed with an MRI. I'm waiting for surgery to have it removed. Been told it's very 'solid' so it will have to be open surgery.

Up until now it's not bothered me too much - it's caused irregular bleeding and bladder issues, but that's been manageable.

However in the past 2 days I've suddenly developed pain in the area where the cyst is. To begin with it was very painful - hurt to touch the area, bend etc. It's a bit better today but still very achy and twingy. I've also had terrible bowel issues alongside it (I have IBS)

Has anyone else had a similar experience? When it first started hurting I thought maybe appendix, but it seems a coincidence that I have a big cyst and that's exactly where it hurts. I didn't go to a&e because it wasn't severe pain - maybe a 5/10 level. But it's definitely bothering me a lot and I hope it isn't going to keep hurting until I have surgery... As I'm probably going to be waiting months ☹️

Thank you everyone for your replies, very helpful. It seems common that these cysts can cause a lot of pain.

My pain has lessened a lot now. It no longer hurts to touch the area, and my bowels seem to have settled down for now (touch wood!). I'm having quite bad sciatica-like pain in my hip/down my thigh though which I think must be also related?? It's a deep ache like something is pressing. It hurts more in certain positions and goes off if I can move around enough to sort of 'dislodge it' I suppose.

I don't think my surgery is going to be very quick on NHS, so I called a private hospital today and they said they could do it in 5-6 weeks. Really considering it. Expensive yes but I need this thing gone.

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor I think that poster was describing the 6 week recovery from open surgery not laparoscopic. Sorry if you knew that but thought maybe you were comparing the two!

@Cupofteaaa5 you ask me my pain, it was either sharp, like someone cutting me slowly inside, or an ache like someone was hanging weights off my uterus!

I had the removed laparoscopically and healed in a few days, but took a couple of weeks to get fully better and to get past the anaesthetic fatigue but i think that was just me!

I am looking at open surgery as mine is too big for keyhole.

I think most places do payment plans these days which makes things a bit easier. I can understand wanting to get it done asap.

Hi. Hope you are all okay. I stumbled across this thread. Looking for reassurance.

I have PCOS. I have pain in my left hand side, by my hip. it can radiate into my leg like sciatica, but also goes into my shoulder blade the same side. I have a weird pain under my left ribs also like there is something there. The pain has been getting increasingly worse.

First Dr I saw in March after pain started getting annoying beginning of feb, told me I probably had a bit of pleurisy.

Saw another Dr in more pain a month later, who said sounds like you have a large ovarian cyst pulling on everything and pressing on nerves. She prescribed neproxen as a pain killer and said if the pain gets unbearable and I start being sick, to go to A and E.

The pain is much worse. I'm tired all the time. Iv booked in to see the GP again tomorrow.

Was wondering if anyone else has experienced this kind of pain with a cyst please. I'm just getting tired and fed up.

I had a massive dermoid cyst. I noticed a lump in my lower stomach in January 2019 and went to the GP who ordered me an non-urgent ultrasound.

About 8 weeks later I still hadn't received an appointment so I paid privately for an ultrasound and was diagnosed with a 10cm cyst, scared the life out of me as the GP then kicked in to action and started talking about tumour markers and referred me urgently to gynae. They took bloods and did an MRI, and confirmed that it didn't look sinister so put me on the non-urgent list for surgery with an expected date of September!!

By the May I literally looked about 6 months pregnant and was getting uncomfortable so tried to hurry the surgery along but they wouldn't do it any quicker so again I paid privately (well my mum and dad did!) for me to have the op. By the time the cyst was removed in early June, along with my right ovary, it was 19cm and was complete with hair and even a little tooth Envy

Strangely I didn't really have much pain with it, I had a dull ache in my leg quite a lot that resolved after the cyst was removed but apart from that (and getting a big belly!) I wouldn't have known it was there!

No one sent you for a scan? Insist on being referred. If funds allow a private scan is about £180. Hope it goes well at the GP.

I had another private scan recently (for a different issue) and it was only £60 which I was very pleasantly surprised by!

Oh that's great, I was only going by what a friend paid recently but actually hers included blood tests.

I'm going to ask for one tomorrow. Thanks. I'm surprised they didn't offer one last time.

Hi, sorry for delayed reply. Yes I have had pain like this with my cyst. It comes and goes, but I had a few days of terrible pain in my hip/down my leg. I found the pain completely went away if I squatted down, or sat in positions where I could make 'space' in my pelvis, if that makes sense.

It's eased now. My symptoms seem to change day to day. Sometimes bladder issues, sometimes bowel pain, sometimes hip pain. I often feel very full and uncomfortable, and get a lot of indigestion. Not sure if it's related.

I'm now having the cyst removed privately as the wait on NHS is a YEAR. Even though I'm on the urgent list. I cannot wait that long. My surgery is booked in for 16th May at a private hospital. I'm having open surgery - midline laparotomy. They are also doing a hysteroscopy while I'm under to investigate some abnormal bleeding. Total cost is £7700.
