Possible Cervical Ectropian and referred for colposcopy

I just had an appointment with my Gynie due to having lots of pain during intercourse for a few months and 2 weeks ago had a very painful smear (negative for HPV). She said my cervix had a large red area which she said is most likely an ectropian, however she wants me to have a colposcopy done to treat it and possibly rule out anything else.

Is this common? I'm just wondering because my smears have always been clear. I've never taken any hormonal contraception either. Just getting a bit worried...

Luckily this is all through private insurance so I have my colposcopy appintment tomorrow evening so thankfully I don't have to wait too long.

I have an ectropian and had a colposcopy about 15 years ago after mild dyskaryosis showed up at a smear. Colposcopy was fine, totally painless, and I had the opportunity to look at my own cervix on the screen which was interesting! All was well, my next 2 smears were annually just to be safe but then back to 3 yearly

I think it's a fairly common referral. Good luck

I have one. Pretty common and I think I've had it for ages.

I tend to spot before my periods and I'm pretty sure it's that.

They found it first in pregnancy and it causes bleeding then too.

Mine seems to be hormone reactive so thankfully it's stopped doctors pushing mirena at me.

I really enjoyed seeing it on the big screen too. Super interesting.

They had a picture taped to the ceiling if you didn't want to look at the screen.

Thank you all, i was just a bit worried because my consultant said it was quite large. I'm hoping the colposcopy will be able to rule out anything sinister tonight...I keep telling myself it's unlikely as I just had a smear and it was negative for HPV, and my smears have always been clear. Never had any bleeding either.

I've had this twice, apparently can be a side effect of the pill. First time I had to go in for cauterisation under local anaesthetic, was in a small treatment centre for half a day. Second time wasn't as bad and they cauterised it whilst doing the colposcopy.
