Mammogram - deodorant?

poppym12 · 08/03/2023 07:22

I've got a mammogram later and just got out of the shower, about to apply deodorant and wondered if I should?

I don't think I've skipped deodorant with my previous mammograms but a quick Google says that you should avoid it (on some websites).

I had my routine mammogram last week. There were no instructions not to wear deodorant and no-one asked if I was (and I was). So I doubt it's an issue.

Don't use deodorant as it may contain aluminium which shows up in the mammogram and mimics the early signs of cancer. The leaflet 'helping you choose' should say something about this. You're risking a call back for nothing other than your deodorant.

My letter said roll on was okay but not spray

Mine too.

I was told not to use it for a mammo and I don't put any post shower body lotion on my boobs either. I take some antiperspirant with me for after though.

PotterofGryfindor · 08/03/2023 07:53

You normally put lotion on your boobs?

simbobs · 08/03/2023 08:10

I have had several mammograms and have never been advised not to use deodorant, nor have I had a call back because of doing so.

Roystonv · 08/03/2023 08:12

I don't use anything on that area until after the procedure so clean skin only

JenniferL27 · 08/03/2023 08:13

My letter said not to apply any.

PuppyMonkey · 08/03/2023 08:31

I’ve only ever read about this on here. I have annual mammograms because of family history and never once has it been mentioned in the appointment letter or in person by anyone at the clinic. Never had a call back.

WoofWoofBeachLife · 08/03/2023 08:52

My letter said no spray deodorant but roll on is fine.

ImAvingOops · 08/03/2023 09:33

What's wrong with lotion on boobs? I thought it was pretty normal to moisturise all over.

PotterofGryfindor · 08/03/2023 10:59

There is a much higher incidence of breast cancer on the area under arm, ie where deodorant accidentally gets sprayed. The theory is that breast tissue acts like a sponge and absorbs the chemicals. I would never put anything directly onto the breast tissue.

Yes I put body lotion all over. It also means I'm checking regularly. I have had breast cancer.

Thanks everyone. I didn't apply any but this is the first time it's even entered my head to not use deodorant before a mammogram.

It didn't say anything on my letter at all.
