Fasting Blood Test

I am booked in for a fasting blood test with a practice nurse soon. This is because I am on HRT and some other medication.

I feel really tired and I sometimes have blood when I wipe myself after going to the toilet. Could I ask if the bloods could be tested for lack of iron and cancer? I am not sure how these things work.

There isn’t a ‘cancer’ blood test exactly. If you are bleeding after wiping it’s likely a fissure or piles (which can be internal not just external) but there is a stool sample they can do to check if a further investigation for cancer, such as a colonoscopy, is needed. It’s not really something to discuss at a 10 minute blood test appointment though tbh. It’s a whole separate consultation needed with a GP who may wish to examine you.

But you can ask for iron to be added to the blood test.

Thanks for replying. I had the blood test and asked to be tested for (lack of iron) and for diabetes.

I went out for a walk this morning after a good nights sleep and felt exhausted.
