Undiagnosed vaginal discharge for 20 years now

NC as this is an embarrassing post.

20 years ago I had unprotected sex and developed a fishy smelly vaginal discharge, clear/light yellow, slightly mucus-ey.

At the time I was checked out at a GUM clinic and given the all clear on the usual STI tests. I was only 20 so I naively assumed it would just go.

Over the years, I went back to the GP a few times to retest (all clear), I've also tried thrush and BV tests, all clear, tried Thrush pessieries, even ordered Metreizone? online in case it was the STI Triaciamonis? Sorry, cant spell check or I will lose this page. That did not work.

This was 10 years ago and I haven't bothered since, resigning myself to a lifetime of this infection.

I met my husband 12 years ago, but it was a fairly platonic relationship and we didn't have sex often, nor was he intimate, so my issues rarely impacted him. We have a child. My husband knew of the issue, but did not seem bothered. He did get an STI screening to be safe too, but it was clear.

I'm fed up with whatever it is that has changed the makeup of my vaginal bacteria as a result of a one night stand. I wear a panty liner, but have to wash trousers frequently as they smell. The discharge is continual. It makes my vagina feel quite gooey and I can feel it inside my body permanently, in the same way when you're on a period and you can feel it, although there isn't actually lots of it to see when it comes out.

I am now newly single and cannot go out dating like this..i don't know what to do, where to start. Should I see a gynaecologist or try STI postal tests as there seem to be a few now that weren't available on the NHS. I feel so down about it all as it feels like it should be treatable, that it was caused by sex, but doesnt show as an infection, thrush or BV. Any advice welcomed as I have lost all hope of ever being able to have a normal sex life again, and I would really like to meet somebody after being in a loveless marriage for so long.

Tbh doesn't sound like sti and if you've been tested many times it isn't more like a hormonal thing. If you've been to a drs regularly then there's something wrong with your Dr having no answer or referring you

After trying various Boots style BV pessaries and probiotics I still had the issue. A private test in April reported that I had Gardnella, but the ABs did not work

I paid to see a private gynaecologist today who says this is just something I need to live with, sounds like discharge, no infection. She did no tests, just an examination and she sees this a fair bit. She could not explain how the day after I'd had unprotected sex years ago could cause this, just that it was coincidence but as that I'd tried all ABs it is not an infection, just discharge.

The problem is I have a new partner and I am conscious of the smell and mucus discharge. He wants to perform oral sex but it's a no for me, which is a shame as I would love to engage.

I'm frustrated as I do not know what to do now, so I think I will send my sample off to Greece and try the Boric Acid suppositries.

I can feel the discharge all the time, as if it were phlegm in my throat, and I know I stink if I don't shower. Just disappointed as I can't believe it's not treatable.

Did they do a test for mycoplasma and ureaplasma? Both are known to contribute to bv

Drawnablank · 19/10/2023 21:45

The private consultant did not take any tests today, she just examined me physically.
I think I am just going to have to send my bloods off to be tested in Greece

You can also get a microbiome test done in the uk to see if there's any bacteria lurking via a company called screenme and also daye

thanks Ice. I will look into that too

@Drawnablank I’m sorry to hear you’ve had such an awful time of this. Hope you’ve finally managed to get sorted.

If not I’ve heard really good things about screen me - I’m about to try the test for fertility related issues.

Just posting on here for anyone visiting in future, I did the screen-me test and it came back with high candida (thrush) - I’ve been on a protocol since and symptoms pretty much gone :) highly recommend!
