Does this sound like B-12 deficiency?

I've been having these symptoms for around two weeks now and i'm going out of my mind. I also have Hypothyroidism so no idea if it's related or not. Had bloods checks a few weeks ago and levels were okay. Got doctors appointment tomorrow but would love if anybody has had any experience of these symptoms and whether these resemble B-12 deficiency or not. Some of these symptoms are very new to me.

  • Extreme fatigue
  • Pins and needles in hands and feet
  • Numbness
  • Weakness
  • Aches and pains in muscles
  • Headaches
  • Bloating
  • Discomfort under ribs, top of abdomen
  • Mouth ulcers
  • Strange whooshing sound in my ear when lie down
  • Vivid dreams
  • Burning sensation in my mouth when drinking
  • Tremors/shakes in one hand

It's really started to affect my life to the point of I can't even work much anymore as I am beyond drained.

Any advice or anyone have these and it turned out to be B-12 related? x

It does but also sounds like typical thyroid problems. You aren't taking biotin and you because this can see the blood test results

It might be due to thyroid so guessing this is being checked and treatment tweaked if needed. The symptoms are also similar to those experienced due to menopause if you’re at that age.

I have thyroid issues and a B12 deficiency, only the extreme tiredness and weakness sounds like B12 to me as I personally had none of the other symptoms…. as others have said the rest sounds like thyroid or something else altogether

My DD 34 has Down Syndrome, she has hypothyroidism since she was 3 and has now got low Vitamin B12. She started injections on Friday and has stated she feels a lot better! She has complained of feeling just like you (not so eloquently as you 😋)Hope you sort something out soon.

Yes that sounds like b12 issue. Please don’t take b12 tablets beforehand as they can give false results. The NHS has a very low acceptable range so you can be ill due to a deficiency but told you’re ok by gP

CrotchetyQuaver · 19/02/2023 20:09

Also ask about getting your vitamin D tested, that can cause issues if you're low

Roominmyhouse · 19/02/2023 20:13

I also have an underactive thyroid and pernicious anaemia so can’t absorb b12 from food. I definitely get some of those symptoms from my b12 deficiency, particularly the pins and needles in my hands and the fatigue. I’d say you should definitely be tested!

Definitely sounds like B12 to me. I tried tablets after being diagnosed at the GP and it didn't help. B12 injections helped lots!!

ScoobyBooby · 19/02/2023 21:07

I agree does sound a lot like b12 . I get pins and needles / headaches / fatigue .

the strange whooshing sound is most likely Pulsatile Tinnitus.
Your best getting a blood test to check all your levels including thyroid and vitamin d

Ceriane · 20/02/2023 17:31

Yes. I had all this and it turned out to be B12 & vitamin D deficiency.

Thank you all x

I went to see the doctor on Saturday and I was really frustrated. She only homed in on one of my symptoms (upper stomach issue) and prescribed me some acid reflux tablets. I tried to explain that I felt very poorly and couldn't work last week due to the extreme fatigue. She said my thyroid levels were fine and said it was 'stress'.

In highsight I should have pushed for B-12 and Vit D tests but my concentration was all over the shop and I felt she was rushing me.

I am going to order some private bloods this week but the more I think about my symptoms, the more I think I do have a B-12 deficiency or Vit D deficiency. The mouth ulcers and burning mouth (back of tongue now) extreme fatigue, pins and needles, and the funny whooshing sound in my ear (sounded like being by the ocean) is very strange for me. Vivid dreams 4 nights in a row...that is definitely new!

I put all these symptoms down to a low thryoid, but I've since upped my medication myself and nothing has changed so doubt it's because of that.

Am I right in thinking, if it comes back as as deficient, will I need injections every 3 months?

Roominmyhouse · 21/02/2023 08:24

You may not necessarily need injection, for some people taking a supplement via tablet or spray is enough. They usually get you to try that first and see if it helps before going for injections.
