Burning Vagina - not thrush or bv

I'm really fed up and hoping anyone has any ideas on what is going on with my body!

About 6 weeks ago I woke up with a sore/ burning vagina and vulva out of nowhere and been suffering ever since. I first thought it must be thrush despite no unusual discharge so tried fluconazole but made no difference.

On the 4th January my period started and since it finished the soreness has been even worse. I also started getting burning when urinating and feeling like I needed to go all the time so about 10 days ago I went doctors thinking I might have a uti. The test they do there and then showed traces of blood and white blood cells so they thought I did have a uti and was given a 3 day dose of antibiotics but they made no difference and I have since found out that they sent it off to be tested and there was no infection.

Last week I thought I'd see the nurse and she said she didn't see anything unusual and took swabs which have come back as negative for everything.

Fast forward to today and I have woke up bleeding like I'm having another period even though the last one finished less than 2 weeks ago! This had never happened to me before and now I'm wondering if this is related to the soreness - a hormone problem perhaps?

I'm mid 30s and not on any bc as partner had a vasectomy.

Could it be this?

Going through similar myself, been bleeding between periods for 2 and a half years and I have burning/stinging inside so much that I can’t bear any examination or sex. All my problems started after a bout of thrush/B.V. but despite all the treatment, the bleeding has continued for years. Had several examinations and seen various doctors and gynaes and still no further. Hope you are ok x

I had the exact same a couple of years back. Tests showed nothing wrong. Thrush treatment did nothing. It just went away by itself and is still a mystery. Never happened again. Hope yours does the same!

You’re on the young side but Could it be perimenopause? The first sign of vaginal atrophy is often burning and/or urinary symptoms.

if it got better during your period it could be cytolytic vaginosis?

ilikeeggs · 25/01/2023 18:54

Thanks for the replies. I've done so much googling and the only things coming up that haven't been ruled out are vaginal atrophy, aerobic vaginitis, and cytolytic vaginosis.

I don't think its lichen sclorosis as don't see any white patches and its not really itchy just sore and burning.

I thought it couldn't be vaginal atrophy due to menopause due to my age but the 2 weird periods 2 weeks apart make me think the problem could be related to my hormones.

I spoke to my gp on the phone and they said they wouldn't test for menopause unless my periods had been irregular for at least 3 months. Its not the bleeding im concerned about though, i just want the soreness to go away! I've got an appointment next week but not too hopeful as every test comes back negative.

It’s not anything to do with that awful scented loo roll is it?

Mishoola · 25/01/2023 19:13

How uncomfortable for you. Have you tried Vagsil or Gina vaginal moisturisers?
Had something similar years back. Had gone into a false early menopause (pregnant or breast feeding for 6years can do that, who knew.)
Anyways got prescribed Vagfem pessaries. They really helped.
perimenopause causes a drop in your hormones including progesterone. Progesterone is the hormone that keeps the uterus soft and full at monthly peak fertility. This dropping can cause intermittent bleeds.

Good Luck with your tests, hope it’s something easy and your back to sitting comfortably soon.

ilikeeggs · 25/01/2023 19:30

@Greenshake no we have been using the same toilet roll we always use and i double checked the packaging to make sure it wasn't scented!

@Mishoola Thank you. I feel like there's something going on with my hormones. The cycle this all started I remember thinking my libido had completely disappeared which is unusual and maybe a sign my hormones had changed. Ive never in my life has a period 2 weeks apart, my cycles are always on the longer side. I think I'm going to ask the GP if they will prescribe an estrogen cream to see if that helps.

have a look on the Vagifem webpage. There is more info on there.

i have vulvodynia and your symptoms sound like mine before my GP prescribed me Amitriptyline. If I miss a couple of doses it flares up again, feels like it’s on fire

Alwayssomething123 · 15/08/2023 07:54

Did this sort it self out for you op? I’m going through the same x

2pence · 15/08/2023 08:42

I had this before peri menopause/menopause and sorted it out with Canesflor Vaginal Probiotics which restore the vagina's natural ph balance.

Did daily till it cleared and then maintained with a pessary after sex.

Only thing that ever worked for me and wish I found this product earlier because recurring soreness had been with me since my teens.

Alwayssomething123 · 15/08/2023 10:13

That’s interesting to know thank you. I have tested negative for uti and thrush but still the problem is there and it’s really getting me down.

ilikeeggs · 16/08/2023 23:07

Sorry I never updated - it basically just went away on its own! I’m pretty sure it was hormone related as had a strange period two weeks after one but then once that second one had finished the burning went away. Very strange but touch wood it’s not come back.

Thanks for this. I’m on holiday at the moment and it feels awful today. I’m booked in a week tomorrow to see the gp again but not sure what they will do it swab and urine sample were clear. Will hope it resolves as yours has. Fingers crossed
