High blood pressure medication and HRT

I discovered recently following years of headaches which I put down to menopause that I have really high Level 3 blood pressure. The doctor has done blood tests put me on Candesartan 8mg tablets and told me I must stop taking my HRT (Femoston 2/10mg - estradiol and dydrogesterone) with immediate effect. I did mention that I'd done a bit of research as I was told many GPs aren't happy to combine HRT with high blood pressure medication but actually the two things should be able to be prescribed together (Dr Louise Newton on the bloodprerssureuk.org website suggests oestrogen prescribed as a patch, gel or spray actually lowers your blood pressure in allowing the blood vessels to widen). Slightly worried about coming off Femoston cold turkey but don't want to be messing about with not getting my blood pressure down as my first priority. I'm early 50's. I wondered if others have any advice if they've also had the experience of coming off HRT for blood pressure issues? Thank you!

Sorry you're dealing with this.

I can't advise, but I can tell you that I am on medication for high blood pressure and my GP was happy for me to have HRT as well. I'm on Oestrogel and Utrogestan, am a few years older than you and postmenopausal. The HRT has not had any impact on my high blood pressure at all.

I hope you get sorted.

I have high blood pressure and taking candesartan 16mg and evorel conti. I spoke to my gp, and she referred me to a menopause specialist to discuss my concerns and options. Neither said there was any issue with combining them. I have had high blood pressure since my early 20s and now on patches there's been no change.

@NameChangingIsAddictive and @DramaAlpaca

Thank you both so much for your input. My GP seemed pretty cut and dry about me stopping HRT even when I got out the Dr Louise Newton screenshot confirming it should be possible. I am resolved not to let this drop. Could be my imagination but I already feel my sleep and temperature regulation are less good without my balancing hormones I'd become used to!

I’m your age and also on Candesartan 24 mg ( have been for years due to familial hypertext tension and stroke risk) I’m also on HRT evorel patches. Under cardiovascular consultant, he has no problem with the hrt

Sabina68 · 24/01/2023 09:15

@Littlemissprosecco

Thank you! This all points to the fact I should safely be able to combine HRT and blood pressure meds! Wonder why my GP wouldn’t entertain it?

I've been on Tibolone for HRT for 8 years. I also take 2 lots of BP pills, there's never been a conversation about whether or not they should be taken together, hope you get it sorted soon

NameChangingIsAddictive · 24/01/2023 11:25

@Sabina68 I've seen my gp last week about some side effects, or what I thought could be side effects of the patch and had my BP checked at the same time. She called yesterday to say my bloods showed very low estrogen and to increase my dosage and nothing was mentioned about my BP meds even with the increase.

Definitely push your gp for continuing hrt if you want it, or at least push for a referral to a specialist/hrt clinic if they can't give you evidence showing that you can't take it with candesartan. Sorry for my ignorance hete but is your hrt patches/through skin or tablets? Could this be the difference, I don't know. If it was though you'd think they would offer you a different type of hrt.

I'm on Ramipril 2.5mg and 50mg Estradot patches without any issues. I'm also in my 50s

shoofly · 24/01/2023 13:00

Reading this with interest. I'm on ramipril 10mg and overweight. Dr wouldn't consider any hrt for me at all

Sabina68 · 24/01/2023 15:46

I'll next see her in a week so will report back. I'm not a smoker nor overweight so the high blood pressure it seems is maybe hereditary.
My HRT has been in tablet form not patches or gel so hoping I can have my hormones back ASAP! @ElinorDashwood68 and @Dirtyslippers and @shoofly thanks for your input!
