Confused and Worried About Smear Test Result - Borderline Changes but HPV Negative

My recent smear test result showed borderline changes but no evidence of HPV, and I will be recalled in 3 years’ time.

I’m in my mid-thirties and all previous results were normal.

I’m worried that it’s too risky to wait 3 years and I should pay to get a private test done sooner?

Since my borderline changes aren’t caused by HPV (and from what I’ve read, almost all changes are caused by HPV), what else could have caused this?

I find the result confusing, and was wondering if anyone had a similar result and what happened? Or if anyone could offer any advice?

Hope your ok, sorry to hear that but my friend had borderline cells, the colposcopy clinic left them there as they weren’t worried, and they disappeared by the next smear.

I thought smear testing was now HPV primary screening? Where do you live?

As in the UK it now just tests you for HPV And if you are negative they don’t test the cells. X

Here in Northern Ireland our cells are analysed first, and if any abnormal cells are detected the sample is also checked for HPV.

Thankfully my sample came back with no evidence of HPV, but am just concerned as to what else could have caused the borderline changes.
