Palpitations after stopping Birth Control

Hi ladies,
I recently stopped taking the pill after taking it for almost 11 years, since I was 16. On the last day of my first 'real' period after stopping the pill (not the withdrawal bleed), I started having heart palpitations every day and at first it was every few minutes.

My blood pressure is normal but I'm convinced that my pulse feels like my heart is skipping a beat or like it's beating one weak beat and is then quickly followed by a strong beat. Although, I have asked my mum who is a nurse, to check it and she doesn't think there's anything abnormal, and my husband has listened to my hearbeat too - all normal, apparently.

The palpitations feel like they're getting less frequent but maybe I'm just getting used to them. They're definitely still there though and it's rare for an hour to go by without me experiencing at least one.

I'm not stressed or anxious, but my chest feels like how you feel when you're super nervous about something, and the palpitation itself feels like how your heart skips a beat when you realise that you've forgotten something if that makes sense?! I don't think I've got any other symptoms, overall I feel better off the pill than I did on it but I can't stand these palpitations!!

I'm wondering if this happened to someone else when they stopped BC? Xx

Apparently palpitations and a drop in hormones are connected, so you stopping your birth control and getting palpitations makes sense. I got palpitations and after tests it was found that I was low in vitamin D and my B12 was nil. These can also cause palpitations. Maybe get bloods checked

I had palpitations on and off and ended up in A&E resus in fast atrial fibrillation. Now on medication and under cardiology investigation.
Assume nothing and get checked out.

Thanks both, I saw my GP today who branded me as a medical mystery as he had no idea what's wrong with me! Booked in for a blood test and ECG tomorrow...will hopefully get some idea what's causing this soon.@cptartapp @Nutsabouttopic

What was your end result?? I've stopped taking my.bc too and have noticed palpitations

RiverBear · 17/09/2023 09:58

@Stacyph13 They just gradually got less frequent over the next few months, until they disappeared completely. Very weird!
