Excruciating cramps started at 3am. Took two 500mg advance Panadol at 3.20am but did very little. Decided to take some ibuprofen just after 4am as well but it turned out I’d picked the wrong pack and they were a different type of paracetamol so I’ve now taken 4 x 500mg within half an hour. I’m absolutely terrified. Please please help

Op just don't take anymote for the next 7 hours you'll be fine, it is the average over 24 hours that matters. Unless you have liver problems already I guess.

Nurse here. We occasionally give a loading dose of 2000 mg of paracetamol. The level that would cause serious toxicity is 75-150 mg/kg so probably likely that you haven't come near that figure. But, just to be safe, the advice we give is no more than 4000 mg or 4g in 24 hours.

Glad a nurse is here.

I was once in a and e and there was an obvious frequent flyer for overdosing. I overheard the conversation between and patient and dr and they didn't seem to over concerned they'd taken 12!

Thank you so much all! (Especially @DailySnail)

Excellent news.

Will I be okay to take ibuprofen in a few hours? Will obviously avoid paracetamol but not sure I’ll get through the day without pain relief. My double dose ironically seems to have had very little impact on the pain and am now very awake and very miserable.

If you get period pain this bad in future try co-codamol. You can also get ibuprofen with codeine in it too if you prefer. Or you can take both if you need it. No co-codamol today though because of the paracetamol in it

Ibuprofen with codeine is definitely your best bet, it is very effective for me on bad pain days.

OhGingleBells · 06/01/2023 13:22

Thank you - will be hunting down ibuprofen with codeine!
