Smell like BO after shower- why?

Recently When I wake up in the morning I smell of body odour under my arms if I've had a shower just before bed.

I then have to then shower again in the morning.

Even my pyjamas absolutely stink of BO and I have to change them every night.

What could be causing this ? Hormones?

I've never had BO even as a teenager.

Could he hormonal, do you use shower gel? I stopped using shower gel and started using plain soap a few years ago and the difference is huge. I smell and feel a lot fresher for longer so could be worth a try.

I've found this, tho not my pjs just me. I've started to use Pears Soap on my pits and it seems to be helping a lot.

I'm at the age where I think peri-menopause is starting to hit so could that be a factor for you?

CremeEggThief · 28/12/2022 14:14

I often need to wash my armpits twice with soap (bar) to completely feel fresh.

urrrgh46 · 28/12/2022 14:15

Hormones or stress or a combination would be my guess.

Stardustkid · 28/12/2022 14:15

Hormones more fun of aging

GallopingGreen · 28/12/2022 14:15

Same happened me in the past 2 years- no issues since I started only using a plain bar of soap in the shower followed by Perspirex deodorant. The deodorant stings like HELL for the first few times you use it but has absolutely killed all BO.

urrrgh46 · 28/12/2022 14:17

I would try making sure you're using an antibacterial soap/shower product and spray antiperspirant on before bed. I like showering evening and morning so it doesn't really bother me tbh. I'd also make sure your clothes are getting cleaned properly and not harbouring the smell.

kimchifix · 28/12/2022 14:19

Sorry if this is stupid but are you going A/P deodorant free overnight? If I shower in the evening but don't want to do it again when I get up I usually put it on then. The only other thing I can think of is to use some kind of anti-bac wash on your pits. It's sometimes bacteria that cause the stink not the sweat itself but could also be hormones or illness.

Swap to soap, it’s much better. Also, wash clothes and pj’s with laundry sanitizer in as well

Notanotherusername4321 · 28/12/2022 14:21

Shower gel or similar products. Use plain soap.

interesting observation when I ran out of dog shampoo and used human shampoo on my dog. Normally I only wash him when he’s muddy, been rolling in crap etc. couple of days after using human shampoo he stank of dog. I had to wash him daily until I got more dog shampoo then immediately went back to not smelling between baths.

I do wonder if some products are formulated like this so you wash more often and use more. Also explains the “hack” a while back where people started using horse shampoo…

I notice I smell “quicker” when I’ve used body wash or shower gel rather than soap. I don’t think it’s as effective at removing bacteria.

kimchifix · 28/12/2022 14:21

Also wash your PJs with a laundry sanitizer as well as detergent - BO can linger on clothes and start to smell after you've had them on and they've warmed up. This has got rid of the stench on my teens sports kit which was lingering after washing normally.

Perime · 28/12/2022 14:22

I've read recently that using glycolic acid on your armpits can help rid you of any smell.

thismeansnothing · 28/12/2022 14:23

I went through a phase like this earlier this year (more than likely hormonal) but either way after reading on here I swapped to bar soap and ditched shower gel. The difference is amazing. I feel (and smell) tons cleaner and fresher. It sounds industrial but the lemon Dettol soap is fab and good ole traditional imperial leather

Yep. Changing to bars of soap was life changing.

purplecorkheart · 28/12/2022 14:25

I need to shave very very regularly too. I tend to wear a vest top in bed too.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 28/12/2022 14:27

Soap and Sure maximum protection

FictionalCharacter · 28/12/2022 14:34

Definitely use bar soap not shower gel. Lather with soap, rinse and repeat.

ButterflyOil · 28/12/2022 14:36

Could it be your PJs? Sometimes you wash things and it’s not in a high enough temp or too many things in the load and the sweat sort of gets baked in. Only solution i’ve found is to bin offending item.

givethistokevin · 28/12/2022 14:43

Your title is misleading, you don't smell like BO after a shower, you smell like BO after a night in bed. Can you not just shower in the moring since you are doing so anyway?

shamalidacdak · 28/12/2022 14:44

Glycolic acid will cure this

GoT1904 · 28/12/2022 14:54

Are you on any medication? I had no issues till I started antidepressants, however now if I'm not on top of it then I REEK 😂 always have to ensure I am well shaved and using enough deo.

At my worst (when I'd first started them) I ordered some extra strength Deo off Amazon that promised to keep BO away for 48hr and it really, really did. I think it was very strongly alcohol based tho.

C1N1C · 28/12/2022 18:37

BO is bacteria. Use the hand sanitiser under your arms occasionally and you'll be fine. The alcohol will nuke all the causal buggies :)

LusciousLeoLocks · 28/12/2022 20:05

Thanks for replies everyone.

Yes I am currently using shower gel to wash so I'll try swapping to a soap bar and see if that's any better :)
