14 day menstrual cycle - early menopause?

Hiya, I'm 36 and currently having a period which came 14 days after my last one started. Up until last year my cycle was 30 - 35 days but then I had one of 18 and another of 17 days. I went to the GP and was tested for everything from thyroid to diabetes to menopause (all came back ok) and also had a womb scan which was normal.

In 2022 they've been around the 25 day mark, some slightly longer, some slightly less, but this one of 14 days has got me a bit worried again. I am not on any hormone contraceptive, definitely not pregnant, not overweight and generally pretty healthy (I hope!) Anyone had similar?

Thank you.

I’m mid forties and in the last year my cycles have gone to around 18-20 days. I think the shortest has been 16 days.
they used to be 23-25 days so always on the shorter side. Im assuming mine is perimenopause.
Is there any history of early menopause in your family? How’s your diet? Changes to your diet can help lengthen your cycle or various supplements. You’d probably want to speak to a womens health nutritionist about that though.

are you on any contraception?

Hi, thanks for your reply; my paternal aunt had an early menopause, but my mum, nanna etc were all late forties/early fifties. My diet is vegetarian but I was eating meat infrequently when I first started having a shorter cycle last year. I'm not on any hormonal contraceptives and haven't been for 7+ years.

I have had similar, although I know from fertility treatment that I have low egg reserve so wouldn’t be surprised if it is peri menopause in my case. Are you hoping to conceive?

Nome11 · 29/11/2022 12:56

Not hoping to conceive, no - I already have two children. Just really hoping it all settles down as a week between one period ending and another beginning seems like not much of a break (though I hardly had any PMT this time and it was a complete surprise when my period came).

Yes, it’s a real pain isn’t it? I had several cycles about 10-14 days long last year. My GP wasn’t really interested, she just said with a cycle that short ovulation wouldn’t be happening.

Have you had covid, or a covid booster, during that time? They are known to affect cycles. I have just seen my GP for a review of HRT and mentioned that I had 2 very short cycles, which is unusual for me. She said it was almost certainly relayed to my covid booster and then covid I caught 8 weeks later. Something about covid binding to oestrogen receptors (I may have misunderstood that bit).

I last had covid (that I know of) in Jan this year, and the booster was a couple of days before I tested positive. I haven't been unwell recently so unless I've been asymptomatic I don't think it's that...

My really short cycles started after my covid booster last December but as it’s now been going on a year I think it must be coincidental and peri menopause.
