Wore antiperspirant for mammogram by mistake

i had the 3 yearly screening mammogram a few days ago. I had received a letter inviting me to go for mammogram and when I rang to arrange the appointment the clerk said they had a space next day so I decided to take it. The clerk said my appointment letter wouldn’t come in time but I could still have the appointment.
I then went for mammogram next day.
But I’ve just found out that you shouldn’t wear antiperspirant for a mammogram. But as I didn’t know and I had used it.
It wasn’t mentioned at the appointment.
However I’m now really worried about it. I always get really anxious anyway but now panicking that it could have affected the mammogram pictures.
Has anyone else made this mistake and if so what happened?
Thanks x

I had a mammogram abroad and was told not to wear deodorant.

I had one last year in the UK, and even double checked when they rang about the booking. He checked with someone else, and said its fine to wear deodorant!

I therefore have no idea, but both mine came back normal thank fully. If you get recalled, just mention it to them.

I've had plenty of mammograms and this is the first that I've heard of not wearing deodorant for it.

nildesparandum · 18/11/2022 20:56

Never heard of this before.
I remember going for a mammogram when I was giving up smoking. It so happened that on the day I had a nicotine patch on my upper chest.I was not asked to remove it, in fact the monographer had a good laugh, saying that was the first time she had seen anyone do this with a nicotine patch.

After mine I whipped out a roll on and the lady said I could have used it anyway. She said sprays are more of an issue.

nomorequinoa · 18/11/2022 21:02

I had one only a few weeks ago and there was nothing in the notes about deodorant and nothing said about the fact that I was wearing it. Stop worrying.

CherrySocks · 18/11/2022 21:04

It's just so it doesn't come off on the machinery.

Thanks for your reply- Did you use a spray one?
I did and it seems they are the sort you shouldn’t wear.

Have never heard of this and have had 3, 2 outside the UK and one in England, on the NHS.

BankseyVest · 18/11/2022 21:09

I've had 4 mammograms and always worn deodorant

Cookerhood · 18/11/2022 21:09

Is been having them for about 15 years & have never heard this

nomorequinoa · 18/11/2022 21:13

It doesn't matter what sort I wore. It doesn't make any difference. Stop winding yourself up. If it had been an issue they would have warned you about it at the appointment. Now go and make yourself a cup of tea (other drinks available) and stop this game.

Pebbles16 · 18/11/2022 21:14

Had one, obviously used deodorant (to not ne offensive), No unmentioned anything

Argh!
Had one, obviously used deodorant (to not BE offensive). NOONE mentioned anything

FourChimneys · 18/11/2022 21:20

The place I go has baby wipes for removing deodorant.

WashAsDelicates · 18/11/2022 21:21

First time I had a mammogram 12y ago I said I was wearing deodorant and was offered wet wipes to clean my armpits. I had a mammogram couple of weeks ago. As every time, the letter said no deodorant, but this time the nurse said it didn't matter.

I have had yearly mammograms at a London hospital as I'm in a 'family history of breast cancer' study. I've probably had around 18/20.

I have never heard of this before, I have worn deodorant to every one..
So that doesn't sound right to me .

Rainbowshit · 18/11/2022 21:28

I had spray deodorant on for mine. Have never heard of this and it was not mentioned to me.

Toddlerteaplease · 18/11/2022 21:28

I feel for the radiographers having to do that job if ladies don't wear deodorant! Envy not envy!

FiveShelties · 18/11/2022 21:36

I have had mammograms in UK and NZ and always been told not to wear deodorant. It sounds like it depends on the policy of the clinic.

Have no idea what difference it makes, but definitely makes me twitchy not wearing deodorant.

SilverSalver · 18/11/2022 21:43

I've had breast cancer and more mammograms than you've had hot dinners. Deodorant had never been mentioned.

Herejustforthisone · 18/11/2022 22:31

If you wear deodorant for a mammogram, tiny white dots can appear on the images. These dots closely resemble calcifications, small marks that signal something going on within the breast tissue. In many cases, calcifications indicate infection, cysts, injury to the breast tissue or old age. But, sometimes calcifications can also be an early sign of breast cancer. If anything that looks like calcifications appears on your mammogram results, your doctor will order more tests to identify the source.

This explanation is from an American source, but I assume the technology is the same, and it’s a message mirrored in NHS literature.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 18/11/2022 22:35

I'm not sure if it was clear from my response but I was also advised NOT to wear it for mine, this was recently and in England.

Lawandsawdus · 18/11/2022 22:40

OP relax. Ring up the screening service on Monday and explain and they will let you know what (if anything) you need to do.

Halsall · 18/11/2022 22:44

I had a routine mammogram this very week and nothing was said about deodorant/antiperspirant - I was wearing it, as I always do (roll-on). I’ve had about 3 mammograms prior to this and it’s always been the same; never been mentioned.
