Was it a bartholin’s cyst, abscess or just a spot?

I’m getting worried I may have done the wrong thing!

Last night, just before bed, I discovered a pea sized hard lump. According to google, it was on the labia minoria. So above the vaginal opening. I could see a faint white head. I tried to squeeze, it was ridiculously painful so I left it.

This morning, it was still there. The white head was still faint but there was more of it. So I squeezed it really hard and lots of pus burst out. I can still see a bit of a white head so I assume there is still pus in there, but nothing else came out, apart from some blood.

I assumed it was a spot, but now I’m wondering if it was a bartholin’s cyst. According to google, it’s not where the glands are, as this spot was further up, but I can’t help but worry I’ve burst a cyst when I shouldn’t have done and now it’s going to get infected!

Thoughts?

I had one on my outer lips the other day. It was huge and very painful! I sat in a hot bath for a while then squeezed it whilst still under water. The bastard has gone now. 😊

IWantTheHouse · 06/11/2022 12:34

I’m hoping the same. If the lump is still there maybe I should have a bath and try again just to make sure all the junk is gone.

I was googling and saw that it if it was a bartholin’s cyst or abscess, it could get infected so started to get really paranoid!

I had a bartholins cyst and from what you describe, I don't think yours was in the right place. Mine was also very deep, under tissue if that makes sense, definitely not something with a head. I'm not a doctor though!

If you're worried about infection you could sit in water and iodine. That's what the doc had me do every day for a while after my cyst was drained (mine ended up being quite a bad one so I had to be put under to have it sorted, stitched etc! 😳)

A GP once told me these were blocked sweat glands. Never heard of it before or after though! Possibly ingrown hairs too but depends on the location.

Hot bath sounds like the thing to try.

i don’t think it’s a cyst. Just take some xtra hygiene measures. Make yourself hot bath with camomile ( I usually use 5 teabags to make strong brew and then add to the bath), change knickers twice a day for the next 2 days and try to wear cotton if possible, wash this place with a bit of soap.

Thank you all. I don’t think it is in the right spot for it to be a bartholin’s cyst, so it probably was a huge and painful spot! I was on my period this week so wonder if the pad caused the spot somehow.

I’ve had this and did the same as you, Dr checked it and it was fine.

stevalnamechanger · 12/11/2022 02:09

I've had the same maybe twice ever ! Oh the pain of squeezing it !

IWantTheHouse · 12/11/2022 11:17

Thank you! I didn’t go to the doctor, but all is ok! It was clearly a spot…it slowly calmed down and is almost gone!

I hadn’t heard of a bartholin’s cyst until MN so started to freak out, but all is well!

I had a bartholin cyst, and it was one of the most painful experiences of my life.
It got to the size of a crème egg, I could barely walk, I couldn't sit down, I ended up in hospital.

This sounds like a blocked pore or maybe an engorged spot, I get those too it definitely does not sound like a bartholin, not in my experience anyway.

Out of interest, what kind of procedure did you have? Did your cyst ever come back? Any issues after?

I had it surgically drained and cleaned (put under for this).
Was very tender afterwards, but within 2 weeks was fine I was back at work just over a week afterwards.

It's not come back yet but this was July 21

Workingwithchildcare · 26/02/2023 13:58

@Teaandcrumpets95 I’m in an and e with the same thing right now. I’m so scared about the procedure. Was the GA ok? It’s been many years since I was knocked out.

Teaandcrumpets95 · 26/02/2023 18:00

@Workingwithchildcare really sorry to hear that!

It was fine I was only out for like half hour I think if that.

They may not even do that depending how bad it is, mine was very bad. Tbh by the time I made it to hospital i was relieved to get some pain relief because I suffered massively the long weekend beforehand.

Hope you feel better soon x
