colposcopy - scared!

Hi all,

Just looking for everyone’s experiences around colposcopy. Firstly smears terrifying are enough for me (was sexually assaulted as a teen) Husband takes me every year and sits holding my hand because I freak out so much.

Had a colposcopy exam in local hospital, felt like I was going to be sick, doctor and nurses were lovely but I still broke down crying.

They started the exam and within 30 seconds of the surgical spirit they used went on she informed me that there was a lot of mutations (graded high in the letter they gave me after) and needed to take a biopsy. At this point I broke down and asked to leave, I was in pain already and was offered no additional pain relief (took ibuprofen & paracetamol before I went) how they expect you to sit there while a chunk is cut out of you I will never know.

The doctor made me promise to come back within a few months but as of yet I haven’t booked in. Have friends that have had awful experiences with this too which is not helping.

Anyone had a positive experience or been offered pain medication?

Just trying to find a way to get through this, thank you for reading x

Much sympathy with you. I get diazepam from GP for smears. Can you ask for a sedative? I had a lazer biopsy some years ago and had a general anaesthetic for this as I could not cope with the thought of it.

I had a local anaesthetic for a biopsy, they let my husband come in with me, he is a paramedic so not the squeamish type. It was all over very quickly. Good luck
