Hi, my second baby was born 9 weeks ago and I was due my smear in June but obviously couldn't have it whilst pregnant. My HV said I could book it once I had my first period, however I am breastfeeding and my periods have not returned and I am not sure how long it will take until they do return and im planning on bf'ing for a year. Has anyone else been in this situation? Can I really not have a smear until after they have returned? I called to ask advice from GP and reception took message and said they would speak to nurse and get back to me but have not yet.

Your health visitor is incorrect. You can only have a smear 12 weeks after birth

I was just told I had to wait 12 weeks so they booked it in at the same time as DD had her 12 week vaccinations. I am breastfeeding and my periods didn't return until 9months so it would have been a long wait. NHS website does advise at least 12 weeks after. Maybe go back to them and tell them what it says on there.

Thanks, I will book in after 12 weeks then. HV isn't linked to the GP practice so I'm sure the nurse will be happy to do it if 12 weeks is the advice from NHS.
