Mid cycle bleeding

shunderland · 19/10/2022 18:16

I've always had regular periods and have never had any spotting outside of my period. I'm 44 now and this month has some light spotting overnight mid cycle. This is the first time it's happened, shall I mention to GP or do they only take note if it's ongoing?

Any advice welcome, this is new for me and I don't want to Google too much as it'll tell me I have something hideous!

Any unusual bleeding should be mentioned so I’d touch base with your GP to be safe

Look up Maisie Hill, she has two books 'Period Power' and 'Perimenopause Power' - it will almost definitely be covered in one or both. Off the top of my head I think it can be caused by low progesterone. I think you can ask your GP for a hormone level test.

Id guess peri menopause.

Thanks all. I'll try to contact the GP on Monday - do you think they'll do anything or just say keep an eye on it

Likely peri but to be on the safe side an ultrasound scan or blood test is probably best

Personally, I would keep a diary of any inbetween bleeding over the next few cycles. It may be hormonal. Then, once you've got a clearer picture of when it's happening, you can go to your gp, If your smears are up to date, I doubt whether the gp will do anything other than say come back in a few months if it continues (if this is the first time it's happened). So by keeping track over a few months, you will probably then be invited to have bloods done, an internal look or an ultrasound.
You never know, this could be completely a one off and it doesn't happen again.

Thanks everyone. I'll send an e-consult to me GP on Monday and see what they say. I suspect they'll ask me to keep an eye on it as you've said.

I'm due a smear (got my letter today) so maybe they'll leave it until that's done.

It's probably my age but worrying when it's not happened before. I'm sure there are lots of benign reasons for it though (not googling!!)

Just to update, I had my smear and I'm awaiting results. The GP wanted to do an internal and take some bloods. Internal appeared fine but she's referred for ultrasound to be sure and I'm still waiting for blood results.

I'll update when I know more

Another update in case someone is in the same position - scan showed 2 fibroids. One 6cm and one 3cm. Bloods showed CA125 was slightly high. I'm going to see my gp next week.
