Stop start periods - or between cycle bleeds?

Hi all. I wanted to check with hive mind about some weird periods. Since having kids (last DS five years ago - period came back at 9pm this PP), my periods have been a bit weird. They used to be very regular (26 days on the dot) lasting for 4-5 days with cramping on the first day that I usually wouldn’t have to take meds for.

Now, they’re still regular at around 26-27 days but they’ll last 2-3 days and be very light after the first day. It’ll completely stop by end of day 3 and then two or three days later I’d get a little gush of blood again - not enough for a cup or a tampon but enough to ruin my undies if I have nothing protecting it. It’s usually brought on by exercise - running or jumping. And it’s not very bright red blood. It’s more dark red though not quite brown.

Ive always assumed this is an extension of my period and not unusual spotting between periods, and it happens every single cycle. I mentioned it to my gyn who just shrugged and said just because you don’t see blood doesn’t mean your period has stopped. I’ve also read that sometimes blood can pool (somewhere?) and come out a day or so later.

Anyone else experience this weirdness? Is it just part of my period hiding in a crevice somewhere then coming out?
