IUD pain or period pain??

I had a copper IUD fitted in November as emergency contraception. Thought I'd probably keep it and get rid of the pill finally. It was horrendous for the first month - bleeding and pain almost continuous but started to settle down after that.

However, I still get excruciating pain during my period - which lasts 10 days now instead of 3-5 it used to last. Currently on day 1 of period but day 3 of stomach cramps, aching legs, back pain etc.

I did have quite heavy, painful periods before but mercifully quite short! I'm tempted to have the thing removed but concerned the problems are period related rather than IUD related.

I know I probably need to speak to the nurse that fitted it but hoping someone can advise me before that.

Severe pain like described along with the other symptoms can be due to endometriosis and this needs to be checked by a gynaecologist. Has anyone ever mentioned endometriosis to you?

Endometriosis if present can also cause heavy bleeding to arise. Infact any symptoms that are cyclical in nature and or get worse uo to and including during menses should be checked out for endometriosis.

You ought to be referred to such a person as a matter of course. if finances allow I would see a gynae privately for an initial consultation as NHS waiting lists for gynaes are very long currently. I would also suggest you keep a daily pain and symptom diary if you do not already do this as this will also give the gynae clues.

So sorry I completely forgot I'd posted this! Was in soooo much pain!

Thanks for info. No, endometriosis has never been mentioned but tbh I only went to the GP a few times and got given tablets which improved it slightly, but I got the impression that was the best I was going to get. I'll try and see a different doctor next time!
