Long period

So I've been bleeding now for nearly 2 months. The blood was turning dark so I thought it was finally coming to an end but this morning I've started bleeding bright red blood again. Has anyone had this? Gp is sending me for bloods but I'm terrified something is wrong. I had a scan a few weeks ago due to a cyst and I was on my period then but it was very light and everything looked normal. Please help I'm beside myself with worry and at my wits end with it now. Thankyou

Are you on any hormone based contraception?

Angelbaby101 · 04/07/2022 09:24

I'm on microgynon 30 I've been on it for around 2 months. I've been on it before too with no issues at all.

It really wouldn't surprise me if this is the cause
I've been on the same pill before and had different reactions to it at different times

Angelbaby101 · 04/07/2022 09:40

That's reassuring. I've never had a period like this before. I was on the mini pill before but I continued to get periods and had headaches so was swapped back to this pill and for a while it was working until now.

I had this last year so gp booked bloods and scan. Turned out I had an underactive thyroid and fibroids/polyps. Any or all of these could be causing my long periods. So it's not necessarily anything sinister, probably something hormonal is out of balance....

Angelbaby101 · 06/07/2022 18:16

Thankyou. I'm really hoping it's something that can be sorted. I'm still bleeding now it doesn't seem to be settling down. Thyroid is something I thought of too as I also have other symptoms

Well I'm still bleeding now 3 months it's been. Doctor has said I have low iron...no suprise so I'm on iron tablets but she never mentioned the bleeding so I'll be back on the phone tomorrow. My thyroid was normal too. I just don't understand what's causing this I'm so worried about it but the doctor doesn't seem to be. Cancer runs in my family so that constantly in the back of my mind.

When I contacted the gp about the same thing they did bloods and referred me for a scan, which revealed the fibroids and polyp. Have they offered you this?

Grimchmas · 25/07/2022 04:37

Low iron can cause heavy and irregular periods for sure, it may have been that you were low before and that is the cause, although your gp should have requested an ultrasound scan and some simple blood tests for you. Birth control could also be the cause. There is a Facebook group called the iron protocol which I found very helpful, and another called menhorragia support group. Lots of potential causes that aren't cancer, but you definitely need your gp to be doing more to investigate.

It's highly unlikely to be anything serious, though I would request a smear if you haven't had one recently just to reassure yourself. I had the same thing last year, where out of the blue, I bled for 2 months. I also had low iron. I was referred for external and internal ultrasounds and no cause could be found. You could ask for tranexamic acid to stop the bleed, you have to take it carefully but in my experience it worked to stop the period.

fedup078 · 25/07/2022 05:57

Are you still taking the pill?

Angelbaby101 · 25/07/2022 07:58

Thanks for your replies. I had a scan scan in June to check on a cyst that has now dissapeared and I was bleeding then but nothing was seen on the scan. I then contacted the gp because I was feeling tired all the time, no energy, heart palpitations along with the bleeding and she did a full blood count and thyroid test and everything came back OK except my iron so she's put me on 3 months of iron tablets but didn't tell me what else to do if I continue to bleed. The bleeding I have (sorry tmi) is sometime pure black and just as I think it's ending it starts again as bright red. She told me to continue with the pill at the minute. I did try to push for a smear but she said I'm not due until next year and wouldn't really budge for me to have one. I'm up early this morning to try get a same day appointment. I'm just so tired all the time I've no energy whatsoever.

I'm very surprised they've told you to keep on with the pill as surely they should be ruling that out
I know when this happened to me the bleeding stopped as soon as I stopped taking the pill

Angelbaby101 · 25/07/2022 09:20

Well just come off the phone to the doctor and she's referred me back to gyno and said they may want to put a camera in to look further which scared me never had one before. The gyno was the one who put me on the pill to stop my periods as i was getting irratation below before a period but the carrazette never worked so put me on microgynon and told me to take it continuous without a break and it seems to have worked for the irratation but the doctor said she's confused as ro why I'm taking it with no break, so I'm not sure. Just waiting game now what can a camera check for? Anyone had one?

Well I'm back again and spoke to the doctor AGAIN as the bleeding still hasn't stopped and I've been told different things by different doctors and the one I spoke to the other day told me that she thinks it's withdrawal bleeding as I've been taking the pill back to back with no breaks...but I was told to do that by my gyno to stop my periods to try and reduce the size of cysts, she's prescribed tablets to stop bleeding and told me to take these and stop the pill for 5 days. Unfortunately the tablets I'm still waiting on as they're out of stock and the bleeding is really heavy today and sorry tmi warning but I'm now also getting clots. I don't know what else to do I'm sick of being told different things by the doctors. I'm waiting on a ultrasound again which I had in June and they won't give me another until December. I've been given iron tablets aswell but if the tablet to stop the bleeding doesn't work ill be on the phone every day until they do something I can't cope running to the toilet everytime.
