BV - but without the fishy smell?

Good evening,

NC for this as it’s an embarrassing one.

I am sick with worry! For the last 5 days I have been suffering with extreme, watery discharge. Color is an undefinable pale brown grey. I am going through 2-3 pads a day, and am generally feeling a little unwell - a bit like a mix of being on my period (mild lower back and groin pain, my typical symptoms), and sort of like I am getting the flu (joint pains etc… but no fever).

My period ended around 2-3 days before this started. I have/had no unusual bleeding or spotting, nor pain during intercourse, and also no itching or burning. My last smear was 6 months ago, and all clear.

My first googling straight away led me to Bacterial Vaginosis. However - and this is the main source for my concern - I do NOT have the seemingly typical tell-tale fishy smell associated with BV. The smell is rather foul/rotten - albeit not overly strong or overpowering. And this is what has me worried sick that it might be Cervical Cancer!

The question has come up if a tampon was forgotten, but I highly doubt it. I don’t use them a lot as I dislike them and generally can’t wait to remove them again. I also tried looking for a string but couldn’t find one.

Now before anyone says “you need to see your GP” etc - I know that! I had a virtual appointment this morning, and have my referral letter to see a gynecologist hopefully in the next couple of days!

But whilst I await that - can anyone talk me down please? I can’t handle another sleepless night. Has anyone ever experienced BV without the fishy smell? Is that possible?

I am 40 years old and married, with no reason to believe my husband is being unfaithful in case that matters.

Thanks in advance.

Crouch down and insert a finger as far as you can into your vagina. You should be able to feel something. Or if you're sat on the loo do the same.

That's sounding much more likely to me.

I had BV, didn't have the fishy smell but did have a foul rotting meat smell which, weirdly, I could only smell when I was washing the area in the shower. (So bad it made me gag)

Started when I got the coil fitted. Got the coil out, round of antibiotics, and it was gone

Suzi888 · 03/07/2022 19:53

No, she was surprised too, as although she felt rough she didn’t feel THAT rough if you get my drift.
Didn’t want to see the doctor so thought she better have one last feel around and found it. She was very relieved, as you can imagine!

I had similar symptoms and it turned out to be cervical polyps. I had them removed and it cured it.

I have many of your symptoms at the mo, OP but without the flu pain.
No smell for me but get the excess discharge, watery and sometimes pink/brown.
I am undergoing trans vaginal screening at the mo and they've spotted a polyp.

I had BV with no symptoms at all, it was picked up when I went to get my coil changed and they wanted to swan me beforehand. So I would image symptoms can vary. Hope you get it sorted quickly.

Grosscostsagreed · 03/07/2022 19:59

Could be aerobic vaginitis. One of thevsymptoms is discharge that smells of rotten meat?

This is exactly what I needed to hear. The moment you google “rotting meat smell” it’s like there’s only one option! Even the GP today was very suspicious about the smell, but she did say “we’re not textbooks, so everyone might experience it slightly differently” which did make me feel a little better (momentarily).

Crazy story! I’ll have another little rummage around.

@Grosscostsagreed goodness, never heard about that and not much online. Smell seems fitting, but not the color and texture of the discharge. 🫤

Just thought I‘d update for the sake if completion: the gynecologist found a rotting, old tampon all the way at the top of my cervix. The feeling of relief (and embarrassment) I‘m feeling right now is on another level. @Suzi888 you were right all along!

👍

Suzi888 · 06/07/2022 14:57

Glad you got it out! I had a strong feeling it was an awol tampon lol.

WhatsErFace2020 · 06/07/2022 15:08

bet your so relieved!! I actually went to my GP 100% sure I had a rouge tampon around 10 years ago, no symptoms I was just sure of it for some reason. There was actually nothing there on examination so did feel a bit like the Doc thought I just fancied him to rummage around 🤣😂 always better to be on the safe side!!

FatPatsCat · 06/07/2022 19:48

Good news that you found the cause OP, although I'm now slightly embarrassed at sharing my smelly fanny story for no reason 😂 thank goodness it's all anonymous!

Northernsoullover · 06/07/2022 19:51

Its much more common than you think to lose one 😉

TresInquiete · 06/07/2022 21:45

@WhatsErFace2020 and @FatPatsCat you just made me LOL 😂😂

I’m so pleased you found the cause and it was nothing serious. I’ve often feared “losing” a tampon- it shouldn’t be embarrassing really because it could happen to any woman. Bet you feel so much better now!
