Starting to take Folic Acid

Sunsetloverr · 12/06/2022 18:43

I stopped taking my contraceptive pill on 27th May and am currently having my first 'natural' period. I want to start taking folic acid multivitamin supplements for different reasons. Could someone advise as to whether it is okay to start taking these soon after coming off my contraceptive pill? Or do I need to wait a couple of months?

Any insight/advice would be great. Thanks.

Please don’t take folic acid, it causes tongue tie and birth defects. You need to be taking folate which is the natural version rather than synthetic.

@Lesserspottedmama Ive not heard that before. Isn't folic acid what's in the pregnacare vitamins?

PartyPlan · 18/06/2022 21:03

the NHS advises to take it before you conceive, it’s good to build up a supply before you are pregnant.

@Lesserspottedmama Do you have a source for your far fetched claim?

Flopsy145 · 18/06/2022 21:15

@PartyPlan I've just googled and folic acid is the synthesized version of folate, but there's nothing about it being to blame for tongue tie etc, pretty sure it would be pulled off the shelves if it was causing birth defects especially after the trouble caused thaladimide in the 60s

Methyl folate is more easily absorbed by the body than folic acid which is what's in most vitamin supplements. Wrt tongue tie I have heard suggestions that TTs have increased since women have been advised to take folic acid but there's no evidence that it's anything more than correlation, and could be just that they're being more widely diagnosed more recently with more of a push towards breastfeeding. As it happens my LO had a near 100% tongue tie and I used methyl folate not folic acid 🤷

A tongue is more easily fixed than a neutral tube defect caused by not taking folic acid.

Yep fine to take straight away
