First Smear Test

Hello, I'm having my first smear test tomorrow, I've only just turned 25 and non of my friends have had one yet, what should I expect? X

My experience is, the nurse locks the door, and draws the curtain round the bed.
You are asked to remove your pants and lie back on the bed - you can keep skirt on if it is a loose / flowing one, or they give you some of that paper roll to cover yourself with.
You put your feet together and draw them up near your bum, with your knees out.
She then asks you to try and relax (!!) while she does the test.
You feel a cold, metal contraption inserted and a bit uncomfortable for a few seconds then she removes it and you get dressed and go home.

Obviously, she explains all this to you when you are there.

It's not my favourite day of the year (well, 3 years) but it is nothing to be concerned about. Over in seconds, and just a bit undignified rather than anything else.

My advice is to think carefully about your clothes - no tights or anything too complicated. I like to have socks on.
Nurses are usually patient and understanding so don’t worry too much.
I think you will be asked about any concerns related to this area, it’s worth to mention if you have any unusual discharge or anything else worrying you so the nurse can check at the same time.

Childless and sexual inactive but did better with an 'experienced midwife' in suffolk rather then some trainee being allowed to have a poke around. Who probably would have fumbled about like they did at Colchester County Hospital sexual heath...in the 90's.

Relax and remember she’s seen hundreds of women, she’s not looking at your bikini line just doing a quick swab to check your health x
