Extremely heavy period won’t stop

I’m 45 and definitely perimenopausal. Periods have been erratic for a year or so and I had none from January until Easter when I started a light bleed. That carried on a few weeks but since last Wednesday I’ve been having crazy bleeding with 20+ big clots (2-3 inches big).

I’m using a Mooncup with the biggest incontinence pads I could find AND period pants and still destroyed the bedsheets twice. I’m having to empty the cup every hour or so.

Weirdly I have had zero cramps! No pain whatsoever, despite suffering painful periods most of my life.

It’s freaking me out that I’m bleeding so heavily for five days now and wondering when it will stop…. I’m definitely not pregnant.

I can’t get a GP appointment for another week and can’t get tranexamic acid OTC where I live.

Any advice or experience? Does this sound like fibroids?

I can't offer any advice, but I would say based on the amount of blood you're losing that it's worth ringing nhs direct.

Sounds absolutely awful OP, hope it eases soon.

Thank you. I’m not in the UK, unfortunately so no NHS help!

Those are pretty big clots. If there’s no advice line to call, and you can’t see a GP for a week, this is probably a moment to go to A&E. If the triage nurse rolls her eyes at you, you can check yourself back out, but I suspect this is something worth investigating.

Seek help asap, that's a huge loss. Can you get to see someone sooner?

It seems to have finally eased up, thank goodness. I’m definitely going to get checked with a gynae though.

@ridemesideway - this is exactly what has happened to me this week. Been referred for a scan but I feel scared at how much blood I'm losing, although it is slowing down somewhat.
What was the outcome for you?

DustyLee123 · 23/04/2023 15:25

If the clots are as big as a 50p piece you need to be getting advice, not waiting a week.

I had a D&C and hysteroscopy. Nothing untoward there and gynae said it was hormonal. That crazy flooding can often happen in perimenopause.
It hadn’t happened since and my periods since D&C are scant and further apart. Hope you get sorted 💐
