Hi, I’m worried sick about my mum (she’s 52) she is currently on her period and on day 33 of bleeding! Shes spoke to the GP who’s done some blood tests and referred her for a scan. She also prescribed some tablets that was supposed to stop them but they have only slowed down Bleeding (I.e made it lighter) But I’m so so worried while waiting for results and scan etc. Has anyone experienced longer periods and it being nothing serious?

Her periods have changed to every 2/3 weeks but now this one is longer than usual (usually about 7 days)

Any advise if greatly appreciated! X

Bleeding like this can cause anaemia to arise so it needs to be sorted.

I have has this issue and in my case endometrial ablation surgery solved the heavy and ongoing bleeding problem associated with peri menopause. I was also prescribed tablets, a blood test (results came back as normal) and an internal ultrasound scan. Your mother may be offered the Mirena coil to try or ablation surgery to remove the lining completely.

Yes I was having periods lasting up to 6 weeks! But randomly sometimes a week’s break, sometimes a ten week break in between, Turned out to be perimenopause. Started HRT which sorted it all out (and helped with other symptoms too).
Hope your mums results come back ok, but could very well be petimenopause.

Thank you so much. The first doctor had said to her (over the phone!) it definitely wasn’t menopause. He hadn’t run any tests or anything! But the second one had said it possibly could be. I’ve googled high and low and can only find information about periods being more frequent (like every 2/3weeks) but nothing about the length of time they happen for.

I’m such a worrier so I just keep thinking something horrible will happen :(

Thank you for taking the time to reply to me, this really has settled my mind x

Yes, my last two periods lasted for 38 and 51 days.

After the first long period, I was seen by gynae, had a biopsy and scans and nothing sinister showed up so I was discharged.

I am now waiting for my second gynae referral, My GP thinks a uterine ablation is a good option for me.

I'm currently taking Provera (progesterone) tablets which will hopefully keep the bleefing stopped until I see gynae again.

During the first bleed I was prescribed tranexamic acid which makes bleeding lighter but doesn't stop it, it was the Provera which eventually made it stop.

You should encourage your mum to book an urgent GP appointment on Monday to check she is on the correct tablets/ dose and also to ask for a blood test for anaemia.
