Tranexamic Acid

The GP has prescribed me 500mg tablets for heavy periods.

The sticker says to take them 'as directed'... but I haven't been told how to take them.

If you take this for heavy periods... how frequently do you take them? I understand it makes most sense to take them from day 2.

Thank you!!

I take them as soon as my period starts and usually for 2/3 days. They’ve really helped

Thanks Ladyli

The NHS page says:

"Most people taking tranexamic acid take 2 tablets (1,000mg), 3 times a day. If this is not working well enough to control your bleeding, your doctor may tell you to take 2 tablets 4 times day."

Is that the dosage you take?

I don’t live in the uk and to be honest I don’t do well on most medication so I take one in the morning and one at night and that’s really helped

Hi, I’ve taken tranexamic acid and the advice from the NHS page is correct. Take 1000 mg 3 times a day (eg with every meal) and if you are worried it’s still very heavy take another dose at bedtime. You can also add in mefanamic acid if tranexamic acid by itself doesn’t work. And you should take it as soon as your period starts. Good luck!

Perhaps starting with 1 twice a day is a good idea, thank you.

Glasgow thank you - I think our posts crossed & I didn't see your reply.
I'm glad to have something I can take to deal with this. Fingers crossed!

Mine is prescribed as 2 tablets 3 times a day but I'd only take that on the very worst days - maybe the first 2 days of my period and then start to reduce the dosage over the next couple of days. It gives me a bit of a groggy headache so I try to only take if i really need to e.g. days I'm in the office or out n about but I wouldn't bother if i was at home.

I would ring the surgery and ask them to clarify.

caringcarer · 04/04/2022 01:25

I used to take 2 tablets 1000mg three times a day. I took every day of period but I used to bleed so heavy it all came away in 3 days usually.

BlackSwan · 05/04/2022 21:33

I took them for 2 days and it was great - though I did look ridiculously bloated on the 2nd day… so I stopped then.
Which begs the question… what happens to all the blood which has built up?? Is it reabsorbed?

Or is some of the usual heavy bleeding not really shedding lining but some kind of small haemorrhage?

I took 2 tablets three times a day for three days this month for the first time. I didn't really notice any reduction in bleeding and had a slight headache. Not sure whether to try again next month or not as worried about other potential side effects which don't seem worth the risk of the pills aren't helping the problem.

BlackSwan · 06/04/2022 20:02

If it didn't help then I wouldn't continue either. I took the same as you and it drastically reduced the bleeding.
