Mirena & Acne

I read recently that the Mirena coil can cause acne in those prone to it. I've had acne for many years, which only disappear after giving birth to dc1. Since then I've had no issue with my skin.

I'm 49 and have horrendous periods, heavy, clots, pain lasting 3-5 days every 26 days, it's so limiting and horrible.

I am considering getting the Mirena to make this stop but would hate to develop acne again.

Did anyone on here experience issues with acne as a result of the Mirena coil?

No but you could look into one of the other coils with fewer hormones in. Jaydess is one of them. Has to be changed every 3 years though.

Yes. It did for me. Like you I was acne prone until I had children. Had the Mirena years later and got spotty again, bad enough to have the coil removed. It did get rid of heavy periods but instead I had near constant light spotting, not ideal!

I had this problem. Nothing would get rid of it. I was on roaccutane for 6 months and it made absolutely to difference to the acne. In the end I took the coil out and my skin went back to normal within a couple of months.

I also bled lightly but constantly for the whole time I had the mirena in.

Acne for years here - roacutane, pill, antibiotics, creams and gels, you name it. It calmed down post menopause. But I agreed to a Mirena the second time I had hysteroscopy, polypectomy and benign biopsy, this was last August. Since then I have had one bout of bleeding, and several days at a time of cramping and acne. This is after five or more period-free years. I really wish I hadn't agreed to being wooshed into it just before going under anaesthetic.

Would you all say that your acne was caused by or made worse by the mirena? My DD has recently developed severe acne and as a last resort had her mirena removed. I'm really hoping it helps her skin but wondered when she might start to see an improvement? She says the worst cystic acne round her chin and mouth has calmed down and she can open her mouth without it hurting now 😢

Hi OP, I've always been prone to acne and had loads of prescription drugs for it from age 15. I had a Mirena in my mid 30s but had it taken out after a year because of the worsening of acne, incredibly greasy skin and a general dirty feeling on my skin. I'm now 46 and doctors are always pushing it on me due to heavy bleeding and as part of my hrt. My skin is still oily and there is no way I'm doing it! My skin is doing well now on oestrogen patches and utrogestan.
