Vaginal scarring and smear

I gave birth to my daughter last year and have been due a smear but been putting it off. However, I really want to get it sorted. I tore really badly when I gave birth and it's never been the same since. I can't use tampons anymore as it's too painful. It's like there is scar tissue in my vagina which is sensitive and painful. I'm worried about the smear hurting, so will they try to do things as gently and carefully as possible if I explain it? Will they also check the scarring for me while I have a smear? It's never been checked, was only glanced at two days after I gave birth to check it wasn't infected. I want to make sure it's actually healed correctly in case that is causing the pain for me.

I would book a GP appointment regarding the pain before the smear test because it sounds as if that needs further investigation
