Mirena and joint pain?

TheRealMummyPig · 27/01/2022 07:54

I had a Mirena coil inserted three months ago and not long afterwards I started to develop joint pains in my ankle/hips/knee. Blood tests and MRI have ruled out rheumatoid arthritis. I'm already on HRT so it shouldn't be peri menopause related.
Anyone else experienced similar?

How old are you OP? It is more likely to be related to your age/perimenopause than the Mirena, even if you are on HRT, and related to a further drop in oestrogen.

@CoconutQueen I'm 40 but going through early peri menopause. The joint pain seems to coincide with the spotting I'm getting too which is relatively heavy some days.

I work in this field. You might need to speak to your doctor about adjusting your HRT as this sounds like it's definitely related to your perimenopause/hormones. Very unlikely to be caused by Mirena. Good luck.

Thanks @CoconutQueen, it's so hard to keep on top of these dreaded hormones. I really hope it's not the Mirena. It's all very frustrating.

What hrt are you on? I know the mirena + oestrogel is one form of hrt, but you said you were already on it, so I’m wondering if you’re doubling up on progesterone with what you’re already taking plus the mirena?

@CrystalMaisie I'm on estrogen patches and Mirena for HRT - that's all

@TheRealMummyPigHello. Did you manage to sort out your joint pain? I’m currently experiencing the same! :)

TheRealMummyPig · 22/04/2025 23:38

@Katie342yes i did! I just needed a higher dose of estrogen as I don’t absorb it through the skin very well. I still have the Mirena and along with high dose patches in actually feel normal. Low estrogen was causing me a lot of pain.
