Cervical Ectropion

Hi ladies

I’ve just been for a smear and the nurse says I have a cervical ectropion. I’ve just googled it and read the causes which tend to be mainly caused in after pregnancy or if on the pill where there is high estrogen. I have never been on the pill and my last pregnancy was 6 years ago. My last smear was clear and now I’m anxiously waiting on the results on the one I had today. Has anyone had a cervical ectropian without being on the pill? I’m just trying to figure out what’s caused it.

Yes, me. No idea what caused it - totally random in my case. I have to be honest I never really gave it a second thought. Subsequent smear tests totally clear and HPV negative.

Hello, I am 24 weeks and I have a cervical ectropion. The consultant insists it's absolutely normal, sometimes because of pregnancy hormonal changes, or in my case because the cervix is trying to heal from a previous cervicitis. I've never been on the pill.
Also from what I read online, it's absolutely not connected to any malignant situation and it doesn't affect the smear tests. Hope that helps !

I had this, 10 years after my last pregnancy and 11 years after last being on the pill. I had it treated and all been fine since.

My doctor said it can be linked to the pill or pregnancy but sometimes not. High oestrogen does seem to be the cause but I guess hormones can fluctuate for a variety of reasons. I had been diagnosed with adenomyosis a few years earlier which is linked to oestrogen levels so may have been the cause in my case.

Thank you all for replying. I guess it’s one of those things! My smear results have come back and I’m negative for hpv, which is reassuring.

I've had it in the past, it's not something that will affect your smear. Mine I assume cleared up on its own as it was never mentioned again. I think pregnancy or the pill can cause it xx

It's really common and many people have it without knowing.

I have it, before ever being on the pill. It's super common and nothing to worry about. Most women don't even know they have it. Your nurse just spotted it while doing the smear.

It could just be hormones, at one point in the month she might not have spotted it but at another time she might.

If you Google it, it says alot of women are just born with it but also that hormonal changes can cause it. So the pill can cause it in someone who wasn't just born with it.

Read up on Jo's cervical cancer trust, webmd etc.

It's totally benign and very common.
