Is this a migraine?

So I suffer from sinus infections. I tend to get them after a cold. But I thought thus was a start to a sinus infection but apart from a headache across my face and temples, a cigarette smell stuck in my nose, I don't smoke or live with any one who does) loud noise is really bothering me. And tingling on my cheek bones. And very heavy pressure across the bridge of my nose on to my cheeks.

Does this sound like a migraine. I'm not congested which is why I don't think its my sinuses. And no mucus. I'm miserable though it's been a week and only goes when I sleep but being awake for 3 minutes it comes back.

Hello OP this sounds both. I've had a fair amount of experience of migraines and at times sinus pain, the two were distinctly different for me.
The only similarity you've described to me is the tingling which I often get as a migraine comes on.

Ok thank you double shot. I'm miserable and home with 4 dc alone and I just can't tolerate the noise. I'm staying upstairs but they can't be left alone. So door is open and they are in and out. Otc medications isn't touching it

OP sounds very tough you have all my sympathies!
The pressure will be contributing most to the pain - if tablets are not working perhaps try steaming or a cool compress to your temples/nose?
Rubbing Vicks if you have any may ease things a tad too... or biting some eucalyptus /Olbas oil in your room ?
Also try and stay hydrated lots of warm soothing drinks help.
Hope you get through this quickly x

Yes, this sounds like a variety of migraine - especially the phantosmia, which is very common.

But you need to see a GP to discuss it.

Didioverstep · 15/01/2022 16:22

Ok thank you @silverhairedcat

I googled too much last night and read some horrible things. Will try the gp on monday

I hate it when I see ppl immediately suggesting Covid but this is exactly how my friend described her symptoms even down to the cigarette smoke smell

Doggydreaming · 15/01/2022 20:05

It doesn't sound like a migraine to me. Other than the 'everything sounding too loud' part. Tbh I would go to an ooh Dr as I old be concernedthis was some sort f fit or stroke or some other neurological weirdness.

Didioverstep · 15/01/2022 20:31

It's been going on for a week so I really don't think it's a stroke or fit. And I'm 30 just turned 2 days ago. No other existing problems. Did a covod test and was negative. I'm 95% sure its a bad sinus Infection as I get the smell thing with that. Just the head ache threw me as it was different to normal and no congestion

I get the cigarette smoke smell before and during a migraine. Remember that a migraine has several stages and can be brought on by sinus pain. I think it's the smell that I notice first although yawning and feeling generally run down come first. The tingling is another symptom I get, my head feels like it's under pressure although this is at the sides of my head rather than in my nose. I think it's both sinuses and migraine.

Didioverstep · 15/01/2022 20:46

I think so Emily. Thank you. Thanks everyone just checking I'm not going crazy! I think it is both as the stuffiness has started in the last 10 minutes and the headache has lessened a bit. Feel a bit off balance so I definitely think it's a migraine and a si us infection. Will be calling gp on Monday and hope they will see me! Thanks again

I'm not an expert on migraines vs sinus pain, I find it hard to tell the difference in myself. I get a lot of "them" when pregnant. For the ones I thought were migraines (the light sensitivity was terrible and a little bit of noise sensitivity... also nausea) I found it actually came from my gut, if I took probiotics it went away.
