Mirena coil.. 9 months ..still spotting

Hey ladies . I've had the mirena coil for almost 9 months and although it has stopped my horrendous flooding periods. . I'm still spotting almost daily... only small amount of brown discharge. Sometimes it stops but only for a maximum of a week .
Anyone else experienced this still after 9 months .
Thanks

Yes I did….a thick brown discharge every single day for a year. They kept saying it would settle but it never did, I had to fight for another six months for them to ‘agree’ to take it out. Terrible.

At least it worked great as a contraceptive because I never wanted to have sex due to the discharge 🙄

UrsulaBursula · 15/01/2022 11:58

I had the same issue but not every month.
I think it’s common with the Mirena.

Jordan0204 · 15/01/2022 11:58

Somewhat makes me feel better I'm not the only one. Id definitely take this over my periods.. but worried this isn't normal. I've had a smear taken in June which was fine . Just wanted to see if anyones constant spotting ever actually stops lol

I had heavy bleeding most days for over a year with the mirena. The very problem it was put in to solve. Like you, doctors were reluctant to remove it and kept saying "give it more time, let it settle" but it never settled.

After one particularly long and nasty bleed (hours) I finally put my foot down and insisted it was removed. It is rather a marmite sort of thing - works well for some people and not for others.

emmathedilemma · 17/01/2022 11:42

yep, another one who suffered with this. It also made the heavy bleeding it was supposed to resolve even heavier and gave me cramps like I've never had in my life. After a year it thankfully bled itself out (or at least that's what we assume happened to it as it went somewhere without being knowingly removed!).

zebrarobot · 17/01/2022 11:45

I had the same, 9 months of bleeding on it. Awful

Rm77 · 19/01/2022 17:47

Hi ! Was just going to post about same issue and found this thread Wink I had the mirena inserted 6 months ago because of heavy periods and mid cycle bleeding ( started after the covid vaccine ). I still have the brown discharge, which gets heavier a week before my period. Periods are still there but lighter and longer; they drag for about 10 days. The doctor didn't tell me anything about this annoying discharge, so it was an unwelcome and unpredictable surprise.

Jordan0204 · 19/01/2022 18:05

I'm not having periods anymore .. which I am so grateful for . Just the brown discharge everydayyyyyyy. It does stop for a week every other month..I get my hopes up.. then its back 😫

Exact same here - I had it removed after a year of constant spotting

SockFluffInTheBath · 19/01/2022 18:17

I got one for the same reasons OP. Bled constantly (really bled- heavy ‘normal’ period not flooding) for 3 months then spotting for ages around a proper 4 wk cycle. Mine is just occasional spotting after that, no periods as such but the seemingly endless spotting was miserable.

BigButtons · 19/01/2022 18:20

I had the same thing- when I went to get it removed the threads had disappeared so had to go to a gynae ward and have it fished out with a hook. I was in constant debilitating pain too. Horrendous.

RMES · 19/01/2022 18:21

I had the same spotting for about 8 months and then it just stopped.

ohdearohdearwhatsnext101 · 19/01/2022 18:32

I have the merina and I'm about to have it out after 5 years! The first year I had exactly what you have described. But it stopped & I haven't had anything (aside from the odd day randomly every 3-4 months) and its been the best thing ever! Stick with it ! It'll be worth it.

Lexieluff · 30/09/2023 06:00

I literally made an account just so I could comment! OP did you end up getting it out or continuing? I’m on 8 & 1/2 months and still dealing with it!! Please tell me it gets better!

Jordan0204 · 02/10/2023 22:01

I still have mine in as I can't bear to go back to the flooding periods. But I do spot very regularly, 3 weeks spotting then 2 weeks of nothing, then it starts again .
Hopefully yours will settle soon, I just think I'll have issues with whatever contraception I'm on and there's nothing they can find wrong.
Have you spoken to a doctor ? I'd hang on until the year mark and if your not happy have it taken out. If it wasn't for the fact I'm housebound 3 days a month with my normal periods I woild have had mine taken out.
Hope it gets better for you x

I had very light spotting on and of for some time (can’t remember exactly). I rarely bothered with liners though and just wore black pants.

I am now just over two years in and haven’t had anything for well over a year.

It did take a long time but amazing now. No periods!

I have gained weight and do miss my old body but that’s a small price to pay for having my life back 🙂

cherrymum80 · 04/10/2023 15:59

I got mine for heavy peroids, the first one came out because of heavy bleeding which was an unhappy surprise. So had a new one put in and was prescribed cycocraptan (? Spelling?) The second attempt stayed put but took about a year to settle also with discharge dragging on for months. It has changed my life though, debilitating peroids stopped and energy has returned. Still get peroids but so light now I only need to use liners and only lasts a day or two. Definitely glad I stuck with it.

Mrsworried1 · 10/11/2023 17:47

Hi how long have you had yours in now? Was it fitted for contraception?
mine was fitted for spotting between periods
hilarious because it’s not actually stopped that, although has stopped a full on “period”.
spotting most days and I’m 10 months in.
Sometimes have a week off. Not very often though lol x

Mrsworried1 · 10/11/2023 17:48

Hi how are you now @Rm77 ? Xx
