Covid affecting period?

gooseygoosey12345 · 04/01/2022 10:37

I had Covid during my period before this one. I then had breakthrough bleeding until my next period which I've never had before. Finished that period 3 days ago and since then had blood tinged discharge and now spotting/breakthrough bleeding.

Has anyone else had similar? Is this something I should be getting checked out? It's bloody annoying if nothing else!

I haven't had covid but I have had this after my covid jab.

First jab was fine, but after the second jab, my next cycle was horrendous - I bled for nearly 11 days and it was really heavy. After that I spotted all the way through to the next period. I take the combined pill so never normally have irregular periods. I have since had a coil fitted as planned and mentioned it to the doctor. She said that I wasn't the first person to mention it.

It's a bit weird and nobody knows. Try moving this to Coronavirus section OP as you might get more answers.

I haven't had Covid but I am on the mini pill. Never any issues apart from the extremely rare case of forgetting to take at the same time and then I get very light spotting for 1, maximum 2 days. Otherwise no periods ever.

After 2nd vaccine I kept getting random light periods so I actually stopped the pill to see if my normal cycle is OK. It was as normal, regular, no issues. I am not peri menopausal and don't have any health problems, always had very regular, trouble free periods. After 3 cycles I started the mini pill again. All good, no bleeding.

Had my booster and since then I often get light bleeding, not just spotting. At random times. And I take the pill at the same time every day to the minute.

All 3 vaccines were Pfizer.

I suspect something happened in relation to the vaccine but can't prove anything and I might just stop taking the pill for a few months because this whole thing is very annoying.

As an aside, at my first vaccine, I specifically asked a doctor if there are any issues associated with taking the pill, if there are any extra precautions I should take. He said no, carry on as normal, there is no interference between the two.

I think having an illness or stress does affect periods. But more in the sense that they stop temporarily. Maybe they just go out of sync. It may be true of contraceptives too.

I have zero proper medical knowledge though.

@vilamoura2003 thank you, sorry to hear you've had issues too. I'm normally like clockwork so this is very irritating. DH had the snip so I wouldn't have to go on hormonal contraceptives but I'd rather do that than constantly be bleeding!

@Branster thank you. I would've thought if anything it'd be a missed period but I've gone the other way. I think I'll give the GP a ring and see if they have any suggestions. It seems that once again womens health is taking a backseat when it comes to side effects!
I have no idea how to move the post but I could repost there, thanks again!

I don't know how posts get move either, sorry.

Yes it's all rather confusing and although I understand we are in relatively new territory with Covid-19, I was hopeful that, by now, we'd have more information on what is happening in relation to periods. As a minimum from past research or observations from other viral infections.
Then investigate vaccination and interactions with hormonal medications specific to women.

It's all one big unknown!.

I do hope your issue gets resolved soon OP. It can't be easy for you to have to go through this.

Hi,

Do you have an update on your situation?

I am on the mini pill and rarely have any bleeding. The odd breakthrough bleed but it's minimal and short lived.

This week I ended up in hospital for tests for lower right abdominal tenderness and dull ache (had it 3 days). Everything was clear and I was sent home with cocodamol. That night I started bleeding. It looks to be stopping now and the pain subsiding.

I had covid 4 weeks ago. Are people finding this after testing positive for covid and being on the mini pill?

I thought I had appendicitis as did the doctors with my pain and where it was.
