Are heavy periods long after childbirth normal?

I had my first child almost 1.5 years ago and ever since my periods have been heavy and painful. I have to wear overnight pads during the day as the regular ones are just not enough anymore. On my heaviest days I can go through 5 or more overnight pads. Even then I can still experience leaks.

I feel like I am going insane. I always had painful and heavy periods since a teenager but now they seem way worse. My hormones also go all over the place and I can be doubled down in pain.

Is this just a side effect of having given birth or should I be seeking medical attention?

Mine were all over the place for years after each birth. It was like puberty all over again.
