Cervical smear whilst pregnant

Hi all,

I'm 30 and I have never had a smear. I am in my first trimester and am suddenly realising how silly I have been not to make time for a smear in the past! My GP has told me I have to be 3months post delivery before I can have a smear now and I am convinced that I have left it so long that there will be something really wrong when I do eventually get it!! This is making me incredibly anxious and I only have myself to blame. Has anyone had a smear whilst pregnant in the past? I'm seeing conflicting opinions online.

No I've always thought you weren't supposed to. I'm due one now and pregnant but will wait until after birth. I can't imagine opening up and irritating your cervix in pregnancy is a good idea but I'm no expert!

No I don't think they will let you have one while pregnant
I'm sure everything will be fine if you just wait til after the birth

I had one booked last month and the nurse refused to do it as I'd had unprotected sex since my last period. Inwardly I was annoyed as we've been TTC for ages (years not months) but it did turn out I was pregnant so was grateful for the caution. I understand there's not much risk in pregnancy, but there's an increase which is why they avoid it.

I did by accident as I didn’t know I was pregnant, I began spotting immediately and she asked if I could be pregnant I said no I’m on the pill, she told me to take a test so I did and I was pregnant she had already sent off my smear and it came back borderline but they said it could be because I was pregnant and I got one 1 year later and it was normal again
