Brown spotting

For my last last three periods I've had brown discharge/spotting for about 3 days before my actual period starts. I've never had this before, my period has always just started ( usually taking me by surprise!!)
Does anyone else have this, I'm early 40s?

I'm age 40, and I now get quite a days of red spotting in the lead up to period fully arriving. I never used to get this but I do now. Have just put it down to another change associated with age! Lol.

@daisymum40 yes I'm thinking it might be an age thing 😳

Just add it to the list lol!

Yep, early 40s and same here too 😩

PeacheyPeach · 29/11/2021 14:40

Crazy how it just started out of nowhere. I don't need to go to the docs about it do I !?

I don't think in itself it's a cause for concern but if you think it's too different from what you would normally experience then a phone call to the doctor to ask wouldn't do any harm.

PeacheyPeach · 29/11/2021 15:22

Yes I don't think it is anything to worry about, I will just keep an eye on it, xx

I was asked if I had any spotting at a GP appointment when I asked for HRT. I always had a very light bleed for a few days before my period each month which I thought nothing of. The GP took it really seriously and sent me for a scan. I had polyps and had to have a hysteroscopy. I was 48 at the time. Best thing I ever did as I'd had really painful periods but thought it was an age thing. I'd advise you to speak to your GP (and if you ever need a hysteroscopy have a general anaesthetic!).

I’ve only recently started to have this in the past year. I’m 48. Gp reckons I have endometriosis but I’d need further investigation to diagnose so she didn’t want to send me for it as I’m not in any major discomfort just this brown spotting. I had an ultrasound about a year ago where I had a blood filled cyst which went away eventually but I do think it recurs every few months as I get the pain back now and again.
In essence I think it’s that time of life with hormonal fluctuations.

PeacheyPeach · 05/12/2021 21:50

@gettingalife did you have pain with with it?
@ddmac do you find that you have pain ?

I don't have any pain and my periods are pretty much normal no extra pain or heavy flow
Maybe I should go to the docs anyway?

No pain but a lot more cramping than I’ve ever had. I had pain when I had the cyst last year on my ovary and the odd stab since.
If in doubt check it out!

gettingalife · 06/12/2021 09:44

@Peacheypeach yes lots of period pain linked to my cycle. More than normal and really uncomfortable.

My last gynae appointment, the gynaecologist gave me 'the talk' as I was 46. apparently breakthrough spotting is a sign of your hormone levels changing. Your progesterone dips after the age of 40 and this is one of the signs. Nothing to worry about but maybe keep an eye on it for when your periods become sporadic (if they ever do) and then seek gynae help.
Also I would absolutely only see a GP who is a specialist in women's medicine so that you get an educated opinion.
