Hi, newbie here and not even sure I'm posting in the right topic lol.

I'm 40 years old, two children and not planning anymore. We've been using the withdrawal method for about two years now (yes I'm aware it's the least reliable and we're currently considering our longer term options). This year my periods have been very erratic, a mixture of long and short cycles. However I'm currently on my longest cycle at CD44, I've done a few pregnancy tests and all negative. I've already spoken to the doctor a few months ago and she didn't think I was approaching menopause yet. But this long cycle is starting to stress me out, whats the chances of a false negative at this stage? Just wondering if anyone has been through a similar experience. I'm thinking if AF doesn't appear in the next few days I'll call the doctor again.

Thanks

I started skipping a period a year at about the same age. I was told it was a sign of very early perimenopause.

DaisyMum40 · 29/11/2021 14:00

I did another test today (CD45), clearblue digitial which was negative so I think I need to stop spending money on tests now lol, and just wait patiently for AF.

I spoke to the doctor today who advised me to wait another month then call back again if still no period arrives. It's so hard not to be stressed, even though it just makes AF even more likely to be delayed!

It does sound like the beginnings of peri. Can you see another doctor?

Mara246 · 02/12/2021 00:20

Have you had a Covid vaccine recently? I had unusually long cycles following both doses.

DaisyMum40 · 02/12/2021 07:54

I had my covid vaccines in January and April (I was NHS at the time so got them earlier than my age cohort). But I've had cycles as short as 22 days and now this one at nearly 50 days.

I have considered perimenopause, and I'll call back in 2-3 weeks and ask to speak to a different doctor if nothing else happens.

Despite saying I wouldn't spend any more money on tests I did another yesterday which was negative. It's just when you read about people testing negative but still being pregnant and the amount of people getting pregnant using withdrawal, it's just all adding to the stress.

I'm starting to think I might have ovulated this week... my CM is starting to look a bit creamy, last weekend and earlier this week it was very clear and watery, not quite EWCM though. Been trying to monitor cervical positioning as well and it's felt quite high open for about two weeks now. My sex drive has massively increased this week also. But surely round about CD44 is way way late for ovulation?! I think I might be waiting another two weeks to find my answer.

It could be ovulation, especially if you are in early peri and your body has suddenly decided to now have a period
DaisyMum40 · 05/12/2021 08:42

@christmaspavlova I'm pretty confident it was ovulation. Last weekend my CM was very clear and wet, I stupidly gave into the massive sex drive increase and we had sex three times over those few days. He pulled out but I'm obviously now super worried about pregnancy given that it was peak fertility window. Can't believe I was that stupid. Anyway, I've got another 10 days or so to wait and find out. If we're not caught out this time, I'm making an appointment for the coil and he's going for the snip!

I've already bumped another thread I started elsewhere but I can't believe I started this thread end of November and here I am, end of December still waiting for a period! Anyway, I've continued to have a pretty high sex drive, lots of watery CM, no period and negative pregnancy tests. I have a doctors appointment scheduled for next week, it cannot come soon enough.

Definitely a good idea to talk to a doc. And to sort bullet proof contraception- so many women get caught out at this age precisely because their cycles go haywire!

Absolutely! Ideally I'd like to get a coil fitted but I'm unsure if I can get that while I'm still waiting on a period, because until do, there's still a chance of pregnancy (however small)? It's on my list to ask the doctor next week.

So I finally spoke to the doctor yesterday! She's going to do more blood tests (I had some done in the summer that were inconclusive) and arrange an ultrasound then possibly refer to a gynaecologist. It looked as though AF was starting yesterday (typical!) but seems to have stopped again so not sure if that was actually a period or just heavy spotting. I'm on the waiting list for a coil which is about four months wait and in the meantime I've got an appointment at the family planning clinic in two weeks to sort out something else while I wait, like the pill.

Oh and husband has made an appointment to discuss a vasectomy, so if he goes through with that then I may not bother getting a coil.

Hi @DaisyMum40 I know this is an old post but I'm having very similar symptoms to you. Can I ask you what was the outcome of your blood tests and ultrasound if ur still around?
