Uti? Make it stop!

I started having symptoms of a uti last Sunday. I used the sachets from the chemist Sunday and Monday and it appeared to go but last night it’s come back times a thousand. I’ve not slept.
I want to rip my insides out!
I’m in the bath waiting for the GP to open.

I’m supposed to be working all weekend!

Drink plenty of water

Avoid sugary drinks like cranberry juice as the sugar negates the cranberry

Take pain killers paracetamol and ibuprofen- you can take these together

Hope you get through to gp but remember a nurse appointment will be ok as often they can prescribe or get doctor to sign it

JohnnyCashcard · 12/11/2021 08:19

All my sympathies, OP. I was coming on to say pretty much what was said above- pints of water (or weak squash if that's easier for you to drink) and paracetamol and ibuprofen.

Last time I had this (during the pandemic) they issued me a prescription for antibiotics over the phone. Hope you get through soon.

Helpstopthepain · 12/11/2021 08:29

Thank you. I’m trying to drink lots but it’s unbearable knowing that when it’s coming out it’s going to hurt.
I’ve taken both paracetamol and ibuprofen.

I promise I’m not usually such a baby.

Same. Had one since Monday and tried to ride it out without antibiotics because they give me thrush and constipation...decided this morning I can't and am waiting for a GP call.
It's worse at night and in the morning I guess as I'm less hydrated. Drink plenty so that when you wee you have fluid to pass otherwise it just hurts more.

Helpstopthepain · 12/11/2021 09:36

@CloseYourEyesAndSee I’m sorry that you are suffering too!

I went to the GP to do a sample but they can’t dip it until later which is a bit annoying because it’s a 30 minute trip each way (no chemists near either so surgery pharmacy if they prescribe something) and driving was agony but fingers crossed I’ll have antibiotics by the end of the day.

My urine looked quite clear. Confused

My GP used to just send the prescription to the pharmacy but I've changed GP now and I hope they don't make me go and give a sample :(

Helpstopthepain · 12/11/2021 10:01

Mine used to be the same but it’s been quite a while since I had one and none of the old doctors are there.

I'd actually recommend cranberry juice, it has been a godsend to both me & DD & got me off permanent antibiotics due to recurring utis/kidney infections. Though these days I do use a cranberry supplement as too often cranberry is loaded with artificial sweeteners

Helpstopthepain · 12/11/2021 11:32

@RockinHorseShit I’ll get ds to go to the shop when he finally gets up.

I don’t feel like pulling my insides out anymore so there’s a bonus. I would imagine that’s because I’ve drunk lots. I really want to sleep but still waiting for a call and don’t think I’ll get comfortable. I think I got around 3 hours in total Sad

Do you drink a lot of caffeine? Apparently a vast portion of people who end up in hospital clinics with persistent UTIs are cured by cutting caffeine from their diet. It’s a terrible irritant.

Helpstopthepain · 12/11/2021 11:39

@FreeBritnee I do drink a lot of tea unfortunately but I’ll switch to decaf if it means not feeling this again! I drink decaf at work anyway.

FreeBritnee · 12/11/2021 12:05

It’s certainly worth a go. When I started suffering we’d just got a new coffee machine and I was suddenly drinking lots of strong coffee. I don’t drink any caffeine at all now. I drink a herbal coffee substitute from Holland and Barrett and chamomile tea with coconut milk. I never got on with decaf tea so it was easier for me to do something completely different.

From memory I got relief in days once I quit caffeine. So even if you can cut it out completely for a week I think you’ll know whether it’s the culprit.

Aderyn21 · 12/11/2021 12:08

How old are you OP? This was a peri menopause symptom for me, which has been vastly improved by topical oestrogen (vagifem).

Sadiequeenofscots · 12/11/2021 12:10

Pharmacists can prescribe a 3 day course of antibiotics OP. No need for the GP.

RockinHorseShit · 12/11/2021 12:42

Coffee monster here... it's definitely not affected my UTIs as I drank neither tea nor coffee etc when I was at my worse & drink plenty of coffee now without bad effects... cranberry juice/capsules were a game changer though

ChickNorris · 12/11/2021 14:42

I came on here to mention D-mannose, too. I have not tried it, have literally only just learnt about it this morning but it's meant to be good at managing UTIs. I looked at the Holland&Barret website and many mention in the reviews that it stopped them needing antibiotics constantly.

Helpstopthepain · 12/11/2021 14:42

@lizziesiddal79 thank you, I’ll have a look.

@Aderyn21 43, I did wonder about that!

@Sadiequeenofscots really? I have reacted badly to a few in the past, would that make a difference?
